liver resection
I have had one liver resection. I have talked to the DR about a second one if needed and he said it would be no problem. I guess it would depend on how much healthy liver is left and what is the current function of the liver. Unless you have a poor DR they probably have screened the patient for liver resection and everything will be allright. Prayers.0 -
had liver resection 5/08
Hi,
I had a liver resection in May of 2008. I have had nodules show up in my liver since then twice now. I was on chemo and it was resolved fairly quickly with the chemo. I had asked about a second liver resection and was told that if I ever needed it that it would be available for me to have done. Not that I'd look forward to the possibility, but felt encouraged that it would be an option if I needed it. I had about 50% of my liver removed- all of my right lobe (which is the smaller lobe) and a wedge resection out of my left lobe. I also had my gallbladder removed at the same time.
I remember hearing from someone on this board around the time of my resection who had it done twice, but I don't remember who it was- sorry. I know it's possible, though.
There possibly could be other options for your mom's liver, however. Some other options to look into would be cyberknife, stereotactical radiation, and RFA. Also, look into Sirspheres, or even getting a intrahepatic chemo pump (chemo pumped directly into the liver). If I were in your mom's shoes, I'd look into all the other possible options.
Take care-

I have a met on my liver (8th segment smack in the middle. I am also Stage for Colon Cancer survivor. Initial surgery was back in 05 for the colon and a portion of the other side of my liver. 6 months of chemo now I am back for more. I see my surgeon this Wednesday. He will tell us then how this will be dealt with.
Once you had the surgery what was your recooperation time.
I am newly unemployed and need to find and get back to work asap.
Thank you Michael0 -

Hi,
I think that I recovered more quickly than a lot of people do from my liver resection. I'm someone who hates being down too long, so I did push myself. Don't know if that was the wisest thing to do, but I did alright. Literally, 9 weeks after my surgery, I was on a family vacation and went white water rafting (I fell out into the rapids), and rode a horse.
The first three weeks were rough- it hurt to turn, bend over and pick something up, or to do much at all. Things got better, although I did pull something and had a bit of pain as a setback once after I bent down to pick something up & I must have turned at the same time and pulled a muscle.
After about 3-4 weeks post op, my healing went more quickly. The first week, I thought I'd never be able to even sit up on my own in bed, but each day gets a little bit better.
I would definitely allow a minimum of two months off from work, depending upon the type of work you do. If you sit at your job, then you could go back sooner. If you have to walk around or do anything physical, it will take longer before you can go back. Everyone is different, though- some heal quickly and some take longer.
