Kitty and Radartiny one said:pets
I had two Miniature Schnauzers when I was diagnosed. My oldest one Charlie passed away Aug 2008. He was ill in January of 2008. They think kidney failure. My youngest Schnauzer is Radar. He is really his Daddy's boy. I also have a big cat I call him Kitty. He follows me around all day and talks to me. He sleeps by me and always purrs, this usually puts me to sleep. Kitty and Radar play every evening. It's quite a sight to see. One of the boys brought home Kitty, I told him I didn't want a cat. Cat spent the night in bed with the boy. Next day I went up and picked up Kitty he took his paw and brushed my face. I said he can stay but you're taking care of him. That lasted about one week. I started feeding him and changing his box, he became my cat. However my husband teases him on a daily basis. Kathleen I used to work at a Vet Clinic and a Police Dog was seen there. He was a solid black Belgium Malinois. He was the most beautiful dog I think I had seen. He would look and keep his eyes on one thing. I saw pictures one day of a suspect that would not surrender, not a pretty sight. Sadly he died from testicular cancer, his name was Storm. I will mention my neighbor dog also. She is a big bad German Shepherd named Sierra. She looks like she would tear you up, but many treats and lots of talking to her, especially when I'm out gardening, she likes us and I can pet her now. I became very attached to alot of the pets that came to the Clinic, I miss seeing them. Oh I can't forget to mention the Clinic Cat Brasky. He was my love. He lived to be 19 I think. He would sit up on the counter and be good until a big dog tried to put their paws up there. Then he would stand up and let out a big meow warning and try to attack the dog. I fell in love with Brasky the first time I saw him.
Hi Tiny One,
Kitty and Radar sound darling! Thank goodness for pets. You must have loved working in a vets office.
**** loved the story about the Belgium Malinois.
Aloha,

Pets are GREAT companions
My husband is home everyday while I go to work, and I know he is NEVER alone. We have six dogs and I know that at least 5 of them will lay by his side during the day and one just loves to place fetch. I also know that they wouldn't let him sleep his day away or get depressed because they will nudge him to feed or go out and the one that likes to play fetch will actually get his rope or ball and toss it at him to play. I think it helps to have a pet cuddle with you when you feel lousy or when you have a rough day, or just need a kiss. I get a little nudge by his GIRL when I sit with my husband, I think she feels that is her place. I think they make us feel loved and special. Take care and God Bless. Margaret0 -
Even better if no T-bone.Patteee said:I actually have 2 cats that
I actually have 2 cats that are pretty worthless as pets. Ya know, they don't wag their tail when I come home, or bark for joy, or basically play any tricks or games and they don't even go for walks, I definitely do not feel more safe and secure with them around.
Which brings me to a point in adding a dog to my life. Problem is the Humane Society wants a fortune, like 300 bucks for their dogs. I keep praying one will smell the tbone steak on the porch and come over, eat and then decide to stay.
Of the four dogs my wife and I have had, two just turned up in our yard, saying they would like this to be their home, if we would just have them. They were great dogs.

I have a 6 year old german
I have a 6 year old german shepherd named Jaelyn (yes, another J) and a puppy border collie mix named Dusty. Jaelyn is my CONSTANT companion. When I'm sick she understands, when I'm sad, she cares and when I'm happy she's in heaven! Dusty...well, we just got him from the shelter a couple of months ago and he's more into playing with my sons. But they are both priceless to me!

Lost Boy
My kitty "Boy" has been missing since Thursday, and I am missing him terribly. I have always had cats, and they are a great comfort and company for me. He got out, I keep looking and calling for him, but I am giving up hope. He was a shelter cat, and blind in one eye from an injury when they got him. It didn't seem to bother him though, a great mouser, and he loved to play fetch too, his favorite fetch toy was a real rabbits foot. I know I will have to get another cat, but I wish Boy would find his way home if he is alive!0 -

Pam - I hope boy comes home soon. It is so hard when an animal goes missing, and you aren't sure if someone else took them in, or something happened to them.
I had a cat that was a housecat, but she got out one day. I didn't see her for 2 weeks. I was sure she was dead. But then one day, there she was on the front step, meowing to be let in.
I hope Boy comes home soon for you.0 -
As of yesterday, I have
As of yesterday, I have added a new BBD (best buddy dog) TOBY to my family!
Toby is a 3 year old springer spaniel- who tried to be a good hunting dog, but just didn't make it. So I stepped up and said, I WANT HIM! Bless the kindness and generous nature of his former owner, who gave him to me!
He has always been an outside dog- which I guess is common for hunting dogs. So, yep, he is not housebroken. So I am starting from ground zero and very glad he does not mind a kennel. He got a bath today!
I love this breed- my last dog was a springer, so I know what I am in for. A life time of loyalty, gentleness, excited welcoming barks and a true best buddy dog. Already I am feeling not so alone!
The cats? Haven't exactly come out of hiding yet. It may be awhile before they are on good terms0 -

I love animals. I had a border collie that I loved. He was smart as a whip but very high energy. A good border collie is very driven to have a job to do because they are very intelligent and get bored easily. When I became ill I couldn`t give him the exercise he needed so I had to give him up. I miss him alot but he went to a man who shows sheep and is now a herding dog. He finally got the job he craved so he`s better off. It helps to know he is in a good place, but I still miss him and think about him. His current owner is good at updating me on how he is doing.

Shortly after my diagnosis my youngest sister gave me a cat. I'm not supposed to have pets were I live but my landlord looks the other way. She spends most of her time sleeping in my laundry baskets. But she always seems to know when I'm not feeling well because then she wants to lay on my lap or lay right across my right side. My husband claims she has magic healing powers and shes healing my liver when she lays across my right side. Shes very quiet and always there when I need a friend. I don't know what I'd do without her. Deb0 -

This is the first time my older female has acted this way. I came home from my CT Friday, got the call to go back to the ER to be admitted due to a PE, so I packed and left right away.
Juniper sat at the door all day long yesterday waiting for me to come home. She never does that - she sleeps in her favorite spots on the sofa or chair. At night she sleept on my husband's chest - insisted on it (she never does that either). He's had all 3 cats glued to him at night. When I couldn't get to sleep the last couple nights, I was missing having my little purring furballs cuddled against me to purr me to sleep.
I hope I get to sleep in my own bed with the furballs tonight.0 -
New Girl
Hi
My boy boy cat never returned, I went to the shelter 2 weeks ago and got a six month old kitty. She is turning out to be a great pet, though spoiled already! Follows me everywhere, and is very loving and wants to be on my lap. She makes being on the computer a challenge, wants to sit on my lap and help me type.

Hi Eric
We have a 2.5 yr old Border collie on the ranch and I understand about Borders having to have a job. As a pup she learned to herd chopped wood and would make her own stacks. She still will pack a log with her on walks and has them stashed all around the house. Took some doing from my husband Dave to not have her take from his piles. Luckily my husband was able to keep her entertained for the past year and half while I was going through treatment. I joke with the folks at work that Dave is not left home alone unsupervised. Phoebe follows him everywhere while he does the ranch chores. She has learned to herd the horses under supervision because they are much larger than sheep and borders herd back to you. Hard to head a horse going at a gallop. She has morning and evening time on the bed before she heads to her bed with a "ready?" When I was in bed a lot she would bring me her rope or plastic yogurt tub (her favorite toy) and constrained herself while playing on the bed with me. I forget how smart these dogs are and how quick they can figure out what's needed. She's also a lover and thank god Borders are so wanting to please. That much energy otherwise would be difficult to direct. She's a tri-colored and weighs 37 lbs of all muscle. I'm glad that you can keep track of your Border collie in his new home. They are special dogs. I'm always guaranteed a bunch of laughs everyday with Phoebe.
all the best, Leslie
PS and then there are the horses, Sterling, Sailor, and Safi (Kabisa) plus my friend's horse Snook, with their own stories. The Morgans, Sailor and Safi, especially love to create stories.0 -
Maine C o o n Cats -FeoKathryn_in_MN said:funny edit
I guess **** is not allowed? We have Maine C o o n cats.
Hi Kathryn
When we were living and working in Baja, a kitten showed up one morning looking for a home. He was all covered in beach tar and after we cleaned him up, we named him Feo, and he was often called by the diminutive Feito by our Mexican friends. He was an orange tabby and readily took to commuting to our 27' sailboat, our home in Baja, on the deck of our kayaks. He didn't love water but it didn't phase him. He hated going to weather and would yowl when we tacked but loved the downwind legs but then who doesn't? Often when the tide was low and we had to tow the kayak to shore over the beach flats in shallow water, he would get exasperated with our slowness and jump into the water and swim to shore. He looked disgusted at us on shore as he shook one paw and then the other, all wet with fur plastered to his skin. You had to be careful to be far enough in front of the kayak or he would jump onto your back and hold on with his claws. One day he stood down the neighbor's Doberman which wandered into the beach house. One of our friends who was visiting and whose wife raised Maine C o o ns, said he was probably one, and picked him up and spread his paws to show some webs between the toes. We were all cringing because one did not just do that to Feo but he was fine with it. He definitely attracted his own fan club over his 14 years, and he rests under a Linden tree here at the ranch. We think he sent Phoebe the Border collie along to watch over us.
all the best, Leslie0 -
