bowel obstruction surgery

Hello Ladies,
'Just returned from two weeks in the hospital after emergency bowel obstrction surgery due to scar tissue. I had been battling symptoms for months and had undergone many negative tests.
'Had three trips to the ER, when they could not find the cause.
I am scared to death as while I appeared to have "worked" in the hospital, since coming home have had no production! I do have a laxative protocol, but it is very harse and I'm scared to start it.
Has anybody ever had this done and how did you fare?
I am told there is no cnacer right now(diagnosed 9/08 3C) so if I could conquer this, I might get a break for a while.

    Hi froggy,

    You've really had a rough time, I'm sure you're glad your home now.
    If you're really afraid to start the protocol that you were told to follow, perhaps you can convince yourself that it's important to follow the instructions and give it a try.

    My other thought would be to call your doctor and see of they can suggest something else. I don't know if stool softeners would help, but I drink prune juice and take Miralax daily. In addition I take 2 Colace tablets.
    that has worked very well for me.

    Not doing anything, especially when you see a problem developing is not a good idea, you know that.

    Thanks for the reply. I talked to the nurse yesterday and seems all have a different opinion, even within the practice. I'm going to try the least harse for now and proceed from there. I have liked Miralax, because it seems to more gentle than the others, but it may take a jolt to get things going! LOL

    I had a bowel obstruction going into my de-bulking surgery. It was resolved during the surgery and approximately 8-10 inches of my intestine were removed. Afterward I used a vegetable laxative (Sena) twice a day and stool softeners - sometimes 3 or 4 stool softeners a day.

    Miralax works well, too. I still have bowel issues - either they are too loose or too hard. It's hard to find a happy medium.

    Thanks for the advice, still trying to recover from the surgery. It seems to be very slow.
    I saw your other post about your MIL and can realate SO much. In addition to trying to battle the cancer, I am caregiver for my 85 year old Mother, who I have been taking care of for 6 years. She has many health problems and I lived in fear that we would be in the hospital at the same time. She is in a facility now, but the responsiblity is wearing me down.Everybody says I should try to medevac her across the country to my brother's, but the logistics and expense are overwhelming. Yet, I'm not sure how much more I can take.
    You should no guilt about your MIL's passing. You did all you could and we all reach a limit. Everybody keeps telling me I need to put myself first, but when you are responsible for another human being, it is so hard. If she was 90, she must have lived a full life and it was, indeed, her time.
    Take care and post about your progress when you get a chance.

    I am from ther UK so things may be a little different over here, but my mother has a similar bowel operation and it took her a while to recover from it. Whenever the bowel is handled (ie from the surgery) it goes into spasm and refuses to work for a while that is why you can't pass stools for a while. After she had been on her course of laxatives everything did return to normal and the surgery was a complete success. I hope things return to normal for you soon. Take care love Tina
