Forgoing the annual BIG OHANA dinner
this year. BTW ohana means family in Hawaiian. My d-n-l is Hawaiian and that means "choke" (pidgin for lots of) people are coming here for dinner. So-o-o, my daughter, her boyfriend and I will cook and eat lots at their place. She wants to make a pumpkin cheesecake and has decreed that dinner will be no earlier than 5:00 PM as she isn't "getting up so d**n early this year to bake a turkey". She was in charge of one of the turkeys last year for the BIG family dinner.
Frankly, I actually like the idea of going out to dinner with the 2 of them but we are all too broke. At least Safeway has a $5.99 9-16 lb turkey, and we don't need many potatoes or string beans. Lola0 -
Daughter taking over this year!
My daughter will be cooking Thanksgiving dinner this year in her new house. This will be her first time. All we have to do is show up! I had to laugh because I asked if we could bring the desert.....I was informed we bought the whole dinner!...LOL ♥Pammy0 -

My family is facing many challenges this last month besides me. My father is struggling with his heart. So tests are being run the days before Thanksgiving. Mom is just a few months out of liver trouble and two bad knees that need replaced. Her sister is being sent home today with lung cancer diagnosed less than 3 weeks ago and it is not looking promising at all. Dinner is at mom's. Usually 30 or more. This year we do not know who can be there or not. My daughter (19) is stepping in and helping me and mom. Of course I think mom and dad should do nothing....they think I should do nothing. But we will all eat together and be more Thankful I think than ever. We do have very much to be Thankful for.

My mom fixes the turkey and everyone else brings a dish. This makes it easy for everyone and we have tooooo much to eat.

Just having this forum to share with our Sisters in Pink is plenty to be thankful for!
I haven't seen my family since April and lots has happened since then...(dx, surgery, chemo.). My 78-year old Mother will cook a fabulous dinner for her kids and grandkids. I will bring 3 pies and cranberry sauce.
Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving! Jane0 -

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
This is my absolutely most favorite holiday! I love that the whole focus is on fellowship with loved ones. Thanks for the good wishes! HubbyDearest and I live 60 miles from our daughter and her family. We are keeping the usual tradition of having dinner with them at their house. Typically we are joined by various members of her husband's family as well, so there will be from 15 to 20 people in all. Some will have dinner, others might show up for dessert. A couple of them will bring side dishes, but we don't count on it. On Tuesday I'll drive down, finalize the shopping, and stay over. Wednesday daughter and I will work together on doing all the prep that can be done the day before. Thursday, we will stuff two turkeys, and maybe cook a ham (the jury is still out on that). Anyway, we are all looking so forward to getting together eating and visiting and enjoying it all. This year we decided to forgo the fancy stuff and use paper and plastic. How nice is that?
I hope you all have a great day, whatever you plan to do! HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Hugs, Gracie0 -
traveling
My kids are in Colorado and we live in New Mexico so we are going to them. My daughter in law is in charge and all we have to do is drive 600 miles! I also sent a check to help. I offered to bring something but so far it's a no go. We will have the big gathering: parents, 4 kids, 2 in laws, granddaughter on thursday and we plan to go out somewhere Saturday night. Then drive home.

Gobble Gobble Gobble!
My niece/daughter and I are cooking for about 25 people~ I adore cooking and decorating the house with festive autumn colors~ it is my favorite holdiay by far! Siobhan (niece/daughter) is in her 2nd year of culinary school, and whereas she has always helped out and been a delight, I expect miracles in the kitchen this year! LOL
As some of you remember, my Reggie is Native American, and we laugh at how fitting it is that a White Woman(me!) is cooking for a group of Indians! He half-jokingly calls this holdiay Thanks-Taking!
I have 2 traditions: For anyone here and having morning coffee, it is mandatory that we watch a particular episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Yes, I have all 7 seasons on DVD. We watch a Thanksgiving episode where the Slayer and her friends are visited by the angry spirits of long-dead Chumash Indians. Actual Chumash language is spoken, and whereas it is a funny, clever episode, it is not far off the mark, historically speaking. Why do we watch this episode in particular? Well, Reggie and all of the Tribal members who are coming for dinner are of the Chumash Tribe! They speak the language, and can vouch for the authenticity of the words spoken. Very cool!
The 2nd tradition I "stole" from that same Buffy episode, and we have enjoyed it for years now! I have boy and girl Pilgrim rag dolls and I admit that for comic relief, I went to a toy store, bought plastic arrows, and ran the poor pilgrims through! The sit semi-proudly in the middle of the dining table as the crowning centerpiece until they are replaced by the REAL star of the day~ the turkey!
So, the day is noisy, fun -filled, satisfying, delicious, with just enough political in-correctness thrown in to make it interesting!Would any of you expect any less from the likes of me? I didn't think so! LOL

Happy Thanksgiving to All
I must be a gluten for punishment. I'm having 30 people here for Thanksgiving, but the nice part is that everyone contributes. I do a turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce and gravy, and everyone else brings the rest. My daughters and son will help to set everything up and clean up, and hopefully (?) I'll have an easy day. It's become a tradition to have Thanksgiving at Grandma's, so who am I to change tradition. Anyway, this will be my only holiday entertaining since I'm having reconstructive surgery on Dec. 16th and I plan to lay low for awhile after that.
I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and I want to thank all of you for who you are, some of the most courageous and strong women I have ever known. Happy Thanksgiving! Connie0 -
We are just having
We are just having Thanksgiving with our two sons. One is supposed to make the turkey but he's very busy with college and working part time so not sure if it will happen. If not I will throw the bird in the oven. He soaks it overnight. I put it in as is. He uses a temperture probe, I cook it till it falls apart. Did you know it is impossible to burn a turkey? I think they must fireproof them. Then there is the Stovetop and grocery store pie. I use to bake it myself but I've lost the touch in crust making.0 -

Claudia, I have a set of candle holders that are pilgrim and indian but they are holding corn except the chief who has a crow.
We were just watching Buffy the other night. My son made me watch it. I'll have to ask if he has that episode.0 -

For the record, in case your son has it, the Buffy episode is from Season 4, episode 8, and it is called "Pangs"~ as in pangs of guilt or conscience. If your son MADE you watch Buffy, I heartily approve of him! LOL0 -
Yes and No
We're doing the same thing we did last year; namely going with a group of friends out to the Mojave desert to ride dirt bikes and quads.
Since our cooking space will be limited, we're picking up a ready-made smoked turkey dinner from a local BBQ restaurant that will include all of the trimmings. Last year's was delicious!!
We're also supposed to bring a side dish to share with the group of about 25, so I'm making the ubiquitous sweet potato casserole.
Should be fun!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving! I know I will be giving thanks for all of you!0 -

We have the oddest Cyber-Censor on this site! The word you typed in has been deleted on other occassions. The trick to getting past the censor is to make tiny changes in the words, either adding a space or a punctuation mark. It is rather insulting that it is perhaps thought any of us would be making crude sexual remarks on these boards...that we even have to think that any part of any word might be offensive is ridiculous! But such is the program that ACS uses!
I will re-type your sentence adding a punctuation mark to the so called offensive word, and you will see it will come through just fine! Grrrrrr to the Powers That Be!
" a local BBQ restaurant that will include all of the tr.immings."
Trust me, if this word hadn't been censored in an earlier post~ I think someone was going to a hair salon and was thrilled that their post chemo hair finally needed tr.imming, I never would have known either. We were all wondering what was so offensive. And then someone had a light-bulb moment. Sheesh!0 -

This year, dinner is at my house. We will have all the t.rimmings. My sister, her husband and 2 sons will share the day with my husband, daughter and her boyfriend and me. I am preparing the turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, brocolli casserole, rolls, cranberries and pies. My sister will bring the fruit salad, sweet potatoes and green bean casserole. I'm getting hungry just writing about all this food. I hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving and enjoys the day with family and friends.0 -

family time
this is such a great time for family to take the time to visit, catch up, etc. I love it. We share the holidays in our family. My uncle takes Thanksgiving (we bring side dishes), I take Christmas, and my mom takes Easter.
I hope everyone has a wonderful time with their families.
