DAD IS HAVING SURGERY

HI EVERYONE, JUST AN UPDATE, WE MET WITH THE SURGENT AND MY DAD WILL BE HAVING HIS OPERATION IN A FEW WEEKS. THEY WENT OVER EVERYTHING WITH US AND THE DOCTOR FEELS THIS WILL BE A GOOD THING. MY DAD IS GONNA BE 84 AND HAS RECTUM CANCER. HE DID CHEMO AND RAD LAST YEAR AND THE TUMOR SHRUNK, AND HAS HAD CLEAN TEST RESULTS FOR ALMOST 11 MONTHS UNTIL NOW. THE CANCER CELLS ARE BACK. HE WILL NEED A PERMANENT COLORECTAL BAG, BUT WE WILL BE MEETING WITH A NURSE TO GO OVER EVERYTHING. THANKS BUZZARD FOR YOUR REPLIES AND EVERYONE ELSE HEARING FROM YOU REALLY HELPS. I AM STILL HAVE TROUBLE REPLYING TO ANYONE ELSES THOUGH. AND IM SORRY FOR THAT. ANY ADVICE YOU CAN HELP US WITH WOULD BE GREAT. HAVE A GREAT DAY AND GODS BLESSINGS TO ALL...LISA

I know he'll be right back up and at em before to long and Im sure you will be relieved ...He'll be fine, remember that you, his caregiver needs a break too so do something nice for yourself also.     I hope your dad is in better spirits, and hope he isn't so sad anymore, I know it's a scary thing, but he'll see it can be of convenience as well, especially with that type of cancer.

    I had a wound vac on me for 5 weeks after the surgery, which was better then a wet/dry packing in the deep incision, my incision goes from the top of my belly to abit past the bellybutton, I won't lie, but the changing of the dressing was the worse part for me, a wound vac lets it heal with less infection. I never got an infection in my incision which was a good thing, but every week it got easier and easier. The home health nurses came to my house 3x a week to change it and clean it.

    After surgery, just make sure he walks alot, sometimes carrying a pillow to your gut made it abit more comfortable, even getting up and laughing, I had to put a pillow on my gut to keep it from being so sore. But, he will get through this, and it does get better.

    And Clift is right, make sure you're going out and having a nice time as well, I make my hubby go fishing, or do something then just wait on me, I feel so guilty when I feel he is giving up the things he loves for me, and I just won't let that happen.

    I wish your dad luck with his surgery, let us know how it turns out and how he is healing!

    We wish you, your Dad and your family well and we will pray for a speedy recovery. There are so many that have so much experience here please ask with what ever question you have. I am in the new stages myself and have learned so much by reading what these experts have to say.

    Good luck to your Dad! You can be active with an ostomy, I was. There's not much you can't do. Maybe not contact Karate or football. There are marathon runners with ostomy's. After he is comfortable with his appliance and recoperates from the surgery, he can do the things he enjoys. Encourage him to walk alot, do a little bit each day, he will feel better and get stronger. A good book to read is the Ostomy Book.
