Pammy , A tincture is simply a given amount of spirits (alcohol) generally 100 proof or stronger and it is made with herbs of your choice at a 50-50 or 60-40 ratio that would be combined in a mason jar and left for a couple of weeks , being shaken 1-2 times daily then filtered through cheese cloth , mesh strainer or similar. Then the contents of the strained material would be put into a dropper bottle (available at local pharmacy) and the drops would be applied under the tongue or added to a tea or juice.
Best Wishes

quite an interesting array of responses Pitt
thanks for opening up this discussion! I tell you, do not be jealous of us California Girls because of the MJ, I wish I had a center that did facials, mani/pedi, accupuncture & massages! Now that sounds like good old fashioned relief!
Medical marijuana is available here, but it does take time and money to be able to access it, so you would be finished with your chemo by the time you got your "prescription". Also, if it does cause cancer or any other health issues, it would be for someone with long term use of the stuff, not the small amount of time you use it during chemo. And yes, I tried it, having to go the "find a friend of a friend" route, and yes, it helps considerably with the nausea, so much so that it is recommended on some of the Cancer websites.
There was an annoucement today for the Feds to lay off the legal facilities here, but there is also the unfortunate side effect of people taking advantage of the laws to grow for profit.
I say do what needs to be done to help in any way to relieve some of the chemo side effects and do not let anyone make you feel bad if you did.

I have to say that I reread all of the responses and found this discussion to be really interesting. I love your information. Thanks for that. I think it is interesting that the US govt holds the patent on medicinal marijuana. It does come in a pill form, and as I said before does not cause a person to become high. My friend's mom had a brain tumor and she used mm to help relieve her nausea so that she could eat. She was able to hold on for 10 years!!! My mom is currently in hospice in VA and can't keep any foods/liquids down so i wish it were legal there so she could try it.
My meds are working fine for me...I'm just dreading the bone aches that will happen this weekend from the Neulasta shot. If it were legal here, darn straight I would try it. But I could never buy from a dealer on a street corner. Nope, I need a legitimate store with some good old-fashioned FDA regulations in place before I'll put it in my body. Funny thing is, from the street corner is probably a lot more natural and safer than these designer drugs I'm using now. Now that's irony for you. Thanks gals for keeping this light and entertaining. I needed a laugh this week and this was a great distraction. Love ya, Pitt0 -

My onc actually said to me...he can't advise it, and would advise me to use ongoing steriods instead....i think not. I have been upfront with ALL of my doctors, surgeons, GP, therapist, etc., that i am using it so in case they need to know for any meds they are giving me, or in case it may interfere with surgery.
My parents are ultra consertive christians, father is actually a retired minister. They came and stayed with with me for the first five weeks of chemo since i live alone. And there we were in the kitchen, mom helping me chop up the marajuana, and dad on the computer figuring out the ratio to alcohol to marajuana. I stopped for a moment and said to them...never in my life did i think the three of us would be in my kitchen doing this together! we had a good laugh. I, too, made the tincture...151, and chopped up buds. I kept it in the dark dropper bottle, actually used a little sample bottle of jack daniels i bought at a liquor store since it needs to be kept in a dark bottle. A few drops under my tongue brought quick relief to my pain that nothing else seemed to touch.
I am a huge advocate...and speak it loud and clear.
Thank you Obama....one step closer!0 -

Now that the use of medical marijuana has been DEcriminalized by the federal government, I too will apply for my medical marijuana card and begin using this NATURAL medicine for my cancer symptoms. I will be using the Silver Surfer Vaporizor, which only HEATS and does not BURN the marijuana, which releases the THC compound. This produces NO smoke, and NO carcinogens because nothing BURNS. Not ALL marijuana produces a "buzz"...and medical marijuana is specifically engineered to relieve symptoms of nausea, chronic pain, lack of appetite, anxiety and sleep disturbances. It can be smoked, vaporized, infused into foods, or infused with alcohol to produce tinctures. My oncologists happily throws handsful of narcotics at me, (He prescribes 120-240 Vicodin to me monthly!!!) but refuses to approve me for medical marijuana because there is NO PROFIT for the BIG DRUG COMPANIES. To any of you who have a moral issue with someone using a natural remedy (that YOUR God created)...all I can say is BITE ME! I join j916 as an advocate!0 -
marijuana fyi
Back in 1987 when I was first diagnosed and on chem, I tried marijuana in desperation. However, it did not work worth crap for me. I couldn't function and I was still vomiting. What really helped me was to take reglan every single day that I was on chemo. The nurses told me to do that--not my doc. Worked for me!0 -

Your doctor doesn't have to clear you to get your license for the medical marijuana....you just take your paperwork with you to the place to get the license, and it is given to you there. Quite honestly, i think i was the only legitimate one there to get a license....but i didn't care. Oh, and also, when you go to purchase it at the special dispensary, make sure you tell them it's for chemo/cancer. When i did, they brought some out from the back that was especially helpful for our symptoms.
i NEVER got a buzz from it...just relief.0 -

CypressCynthia, I have sent you a PM regarding the use of Reglan. Hope you get the information I sent, and will be careful on recommending Reglan to anyone, especially those "older female" types. You are right, it did work to prevent nausea, but the neurological conseuqences for some users is an issue I would hate to see anyone have to combat. Now, I haven't tried marijuana, so don't know how that would work. Thanks for listening. Hugs.

Why would anyone consider this a crime??? if it helps, use it. I guess I never asked but I should have, I used it when needed, and it helped much!0 -

What about "Pot Brownies"? Then you not only take care of the medicinal effect, but the munchies too!! It does make the whole house stink when you are baking them though (whoops, did I say that out loud?) Teehee....♥Pammy

I am so sorry that you had such awful problems. I did say 1987 so that readers would know my advice is 20+ years old. First law of pharmacology is that every drug has an adverse effect. However, I agree that permanent tardive dyskinesia is not an acceptable risk. Good luck to you.0 -

you need to be careful with
you need to be careful with marijuana use. While it does take way the pain it can inhibit your immune system. It is not always the best thing to use. I live in California, can get a medical marijuana card if I want but will definitely not use it during chemo.0 -
chemo and pot
I've had the question come up a couple of times already this week - would I try to use pot when I have chemo if i have nausea and related side effects. I used to, ahem, partake, in my high school days. I was a card carrying member of the parking lot Grateful Dead, peace-loving, born a decade too late hippie crowd. I started getting panic attacks & anxiety- issues & quit, about 15 years ago or so. I am also a former cigarette smoker, I'm sitting here right now with a nicotine patch on my butt. I quit smoking when we started to get pregnant with my baby Lia (19months) but started indulging (cigarettes, not pot) after I was done breast feeding her, usually when I'd have drinks with friends. I was able to cut it down to only 2 or 3 a day, and thought the patch would help me get over that hump. What I meant to get to before I sidelined myself, is that I am aboslutely open to trying it, but being a former smoker & now wanting to get in the habit of inhaling ANY kind of smoke, I would just have some goodies like brownies made. I have a relative in CA who has a prescription for chronic pain and he actually never gets the actual pot, mostly gets brownies. I do believe, though, that it was the pot coffee cake from a few weeks ago, that knocked him on his butt
And i think there was an earlier question about just putting regular pot into brownies or tea, I don't know about tea, but most that I've heard of actually make a kind of "pot butter" with it that they use in baking, brownies, even chocolate chip cookies (that actually have a greenish tint to them).
I say whatever works for you, and me personally, I hate throwing up more than just about anything else in the world, I'd probably eat dirt if it was proven to prevent vomiting.

Tried it but, medically, it
Tried it but, medically, it just didn't work worth crap for me. Vomited like crazy and felt woozy and head-achy. Did much, much better on prescription meds and without those meds I wouldn't have made it.0 -

was brought up and I am happy to say that .. I did have RX slip to go out and purchase medical 'mary jane' .. however, with 2 teen agers at home .. my choice was not to fill my prescription. This was my decision - reqrets ? No.
Also, please note that I too am an XXXX smoker .. Stopped smoking a few weeks after being diagnosised.
Do what is right for YOU, and your situation.
Best of Luck!

Can't believe I am reading this after all these years. I was just at Pain Specialist and they certainly have learned a lot about THC in that last 8 years. She knows more than I do for sure and is now an accepted medicine in cancer field. The only thing they can find the matter with smoking pot is the tobacco products people put with them. Oh and right the people who smoke cigs and pot don't fair as well. Often try to blame pot for their coughs but in fact due to tobacco.
There are two kinds of pills out but they are THC alone and there is a spray now that is the complete component of the plant and works better than pills. 14 years ago my doctor would not admit there was a THC pill back then because she knew we would be wasting our money. The spray costs about a dollar a spray in Canada and can only be perscribed for cancer patients having chemo or have MS, that is in Canada.
Funny how you put the Prince of Pot or the Seed man in jail and now you too are loosening your laws for medicinal purposes. Mark Emery sold the seeds not the dope...

Interesting . . .
Well, this is very interesting. When I was first diagnosed I remember having a fleeting thought about mj, but at that point I didn't know I would need to have chemo. Now I know I will be starting chemo mid July. Have any of you who had a conversation with your oncologist about this topic received any encouragement to try it? I am in California - since there are many medical marijuana shops, someone must be giving some patients a thumbs up. (As an aside, I was a child of the '60s, but now I'm in my 60's!).
