Good news - moving forward

I saw the surgeon today and he agreed to go ahead with another attempt to insert a PowerPort, as long as I consent to the increased risk of infection with a wound present. The wound from the first port removal is healing nicely - getting close to healed, but still open. He doesn't think it poses much threat because it has been healing faster than expected and there is no infection left, and I've had so many antibiotics.

If all goes well tomorrow, chemo starts Thursday, just two weeks, two surgeries, one infection, and one hospital stay beyond what I expected. I'm happy not to be hanging in limbo anymore, and ready to move forward and fight.

    Good
Glad to hear that they are going to try it again. You get to the point you just want to "get this party started" and it sounds like you will be soon. Good luck in reinserting the port. I'm sure that all will go fine this time.

I have a new port! I'm really swollen again, but not as bad as last time, and no hot red spots. Tomorrow I get to start the real battle to make sure no pesky cells can invade my liver, lungs or lymph nodes (and if the spots the PET saw are cancer, we are going to wipe them out)!

I sure hope they can find the spot to access my port tomorrow - swelling is making that difficult. I have a call in to the surgeon to find out what I am supposed to due with the big plastic tape over the incision. It is the big clear one like they put over IV's. I don't know if I have this because I seemed to be allergic to the glue last time, or if it was for additional protection from bacteria due to the infection last time. Anyone else have this?

I do hope you have luck with this port. My husband got an infection in his port the day he got it, but caught right away and antibiotics took care of it right away. I pray you don't get an infection and treatment goes well. God Bless and take care. Margaret

    Hey Kathryn!
Sooo happy to hear you finally got your port, but sucks it's so close to chemo! I had a few weeks to heal before I even got chemo in my port. Good luck with the chemo, the battle begins!

What I did was have them put a gauze over my incision, before they put the tape on, so that when they take it off, it doesn't rip the incision, don't let them use a band aid either, as it hurts when you peel that off as well. I had a scab that one chemo nurse taped over, brought the pump home, and the home health nurse tore it off, and the scab came with it, needless to say, it took a little more time to heal, with alot of neosporin, since it got infected! but the gauze over it, at least wont stick to that swollen area.

I'd also get some numbing cream, I use a prescription Lidocaine cream, and put it over the area of my port, (thickly! glob it on!) about an hour before they stick me, and I don't feel a thing! works great!

    Hugsss!

    Finally
I bet you are so relieved to have the port put back in. I'm hoping that this one will work better for you and no infection. Good luck tomorrow as you begin your treatment. I hope you did get some Lidocaine, that really does help. Let us know how you do.
