I just had the 100 mcg rai dose.I have small kids amd a dog.Is it true that things I touch can leave radioactive chemicals on things? They told me to stay away from everyone for about 2 weeks.
Hi Lisa,
I just went through the RAI treatment a couple of weeks ago, and I did have to keep distance from others for 1 week. I could not sleep in same bed as my husband, even though he works 3rd shift, I had to sleep in spare room for 1 week, and launder my clothing and linens separetly . I did have a couple of visitors, we sat on patio outside about 10 feet apart, and only for 20 minutes. I did not stay in same room with husband longer than 20 minutes either. I could not see my grandkids for 2 weeks, or be around pregnant women for 2 weeks. It was not so bad, I had a lot to keep me busy, I work from home. If you have small kids I would imagine it will be much harder, doc should tell you what is allowed and what isn't. The biggest concern is that others are not exposed to your body fluids, that is why they tell you to have use of bathroom just for you and no one else.
I also used all disposable utensils, plates, cups, that way my dishes did not come in contact with those used by others. You also should wash your sheets that you sleep on and bag them up for 30 days before using them on abed that you share with others.
My dose was 75, I would imagine the higher the dose the more careful you have to be. Hope this helped you. I wish you the best!0 -

There is a cook book on the thyca.org,it has a lot of items. I cooked chicken in olive oil with pepper's, onions, mushrooms and any other kind of
veggie. just did'nt add salt. You can pepper and season it with other spices.
You can find lemmon drops at Cracker barrel sometimes.

Yes, purchase some clorox wipes. I went around the house and wiped everything I touch. there good to have in the bathroom after every flush too. My 1ST dose was 150mci. considered hi dose. Make sure you drink plenty of water, take a stool softener if you need to. If you were staying in the hospital they would monitor all your intake and out. When you stay at home you are your monitor. Take care of yourself!

There's no major problem if a little iodine sneaks into your diet while on the LID. As I understand it, iodine will reduce the uptake but a little iodine will only affect it a little.
I've had the two thyrogen shots followed by RAI twice. The first time I got 150mci, the second dose was 200mci. I asked for the very high dose and my doctor reluctantly agreed after doing some research and consulting with other experts. He said it was only the second time in his 30 year career that he gave such a dose.
It didn't work for me, however, so now I'm in a clinical trial at the Mayo taking a new drug called pazopanib. That has done me more good than the RAI** but the side effects are much worse. I didn't have any problems with the radiation and isolation but I live alone with a cat so my GF kept the cat and stayed at her place all week.
**Most thyroid cancers respond to RAI so don't let my story discourage you. As long as the scans that follow RAI show uptake the radioactive iodine can work for you.0 -

Hey everyone! I too had the thyrogen shots then the scan (this was end of August) with no problems. Did not do the LID even, and scan came back clean. This was my first follow up treatment since diagnosis in May, 2008. I was surprised how smooth and side-effect free it went!
Would hope everyone could have the same experience with their follow up. Keep smiling and God bless...

Nope,I Didn't have any restrictions with it, it was a low dosage. You will need to ask your
Doctor. They should tell you before you leave if they don't make a note to ask them.
