STAGE IV GASTRIC CANCER
My father was diagnosed with IV Gastric Cancer about two months ago. Doctors said that it has spread to his liver and surgery couldn't be possible bc he wouldn't survive it. I am only 24 years old and I am also the eldest of three girls, this is tough as my dad is the only man who has always been there for us. This is all new to me and my family, so I have to take charge in getting informed to pass on some good advice and stories. Back to the beginning, I am positive my dad is a strong guy and he can make it, but I am scared that he won't. He's a healthy man overall, no other medical issues besides cancer. Never did drugs, not a smoker/drinker.
If there are any survivors with the same/similar issue, can I get some feedback please?!
Thank you and God Bless you all.
Claudia

Stage iv stomach cancer
Hi Claudia. I'm very sorry to hear about your Dad. My wife was diagnosed about a month ago with gastric and esophagal cancer which has spread to the liver, and possibly her lymph nodes as well. Not good. We are in the midst of deciding about Chemo or alternative medicine. I don't think she wants chemo. They said even with chemo it would only be a 40% chance of helping her. From the very first Doctor's visit she seems resigned to her fate. She has done very little research about her cancer, doesn't seem to want to take any treatment, i guess she is stuck in the shock/denial stage. I've moved on to the fighting/anger stage, but i'm not the one with the cancer. It's beyond tough, it's supremely frustrating. She has made some changes to her diet, but she is losing weight fast, has no appetite, and has told me she really does'nt believe that herbs or alternative treatments work. We have 4 beautiful daughters, and very good friends and support network, but she does'nt seem to want to fight. I don't want to pressure her into something she does'nt want but it's so hard watching her die a little each day. Should i just back off and let her remaining time be peaceful or should i encourage her to fight with everything she has? I don't know what to do. My dad died of colon cancer mestasticized to the liver 4 years ago, he lasted 2 years longer than what docors said by alternative means. I know what your going thru. Any thoughts appreciated. Rick0 -

Dear Rick,
I'm so sorry to hear about your wife. I know how tough this is on her, you and your family. We are in a similiar situation, with my husband being diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer, in April 09. He's just finished round 6 of chemo. He's had some bad experiences with side effects, but if this is what it takes for him to be here, to see the last of our 2 children raised (and the 5 grandchildren with 1 on the way), then it's all worth it. It's very hard to see someone you love so much go through something like this. But, if you can encourage her at all to not give up and fight this, I think she would be glad she did. They are finding new and advanced treatments and possible cures everyday! I know in the middle of his treatments, when the side effects start, he thinks he can't take another treatment, our family is there to encourage him to fight and not give up! We also know that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is carrying him and our family, through this trying time. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you and your family will encourage her to fight and fight hard, maybe she will change her mind. I don't think my husband or anyone in our family, would do anything differently with him getting his treatments. Like you said your dad lasted 2 yrs longer than they said he would. 2 more yrs is such a precious gift. Hang in there, my thoughts and prayers are with your family. God Bless, Terry0
