Not cancer related, this is a social problem

I just read an article concerning an uproar in Florida over an 83-0 HS football score. All the parents and school administrators are in a tizzy over the beating. This is discouraging. Why should anyone or team diminish their performance to a lower level. I shutter to think what is going on in people's minds when they experience excellence and discredit it because it was too excellent. Some time in our recent history is has become OK to not do, or try, your best at everything. This team in FL played the entire second half of football with 2nd and 3rd string players. These players practice hard and contribute to the team. Seldom do they get the opportunity to play and even more seldom do they get the opportunity to perform perfectly. If I was the father of one of those backup players I would be ecstatic for my child to have performed so well when called upon to play. Instead, they are being chastised for doing well.
The uproar should be in the other direction. Mediocrity is not OK. It shouldn't be encouraged and we shouldn't diminish our performances to placate those who don't perform as well.

    18 yearold Son plays defense
I understand your point, My son now 18 has played defense in HS and JHS teams and HE has had good years and bad years and games where no scores were made and games where they scored and the other team did not. In most football has taught him so much and has made hime a very good young adult, That i am proud of>

When ever there is a game like you discribed the winning team also puts in its second string and gives the loosing team and the not so experienced players a chance to play, In 8 years of football i know my son has played alot because of this. Football is a sport and it needs to betaken as a means of fitness and enyoyment.

When a game is really out of wack, i witnessed as much time delay as humanally possible not to rub the other teams nose in it. But you are right we need to Give these kids a taste of real life and score as much as possible.

Life is big kick in the posterier, and the sooner kids learn to score as much as possible the better the whole world will be. Mediorker and equallity and no one to blame, zero tolerance is killing this country.

My sons freshman year he was hurrased and ended up defending himself from an attack from an older student. they were both suspended and lost three days at school. My son did not start the fight infact he was trying to prevent it from happening when he was attacted. No matter Zero tolerance Policy applied. So i asked the VP. If my daughter was attacted in school by an older student she was to lay down and take it, or could she fight back? The VP didnot know how to respond. It is a scary world were kids can't defend themselves and are taught to take a beating or take abuse because fighting back is wrong.

Ok what if fighting back is wrong well then i guess all of us when cancer came assulting and bullying us We should just give up and not fight back?

    Just my opinoin

Fighting all the way and scoring every chance i get

    Totally Agree
    John

No arguments from me on this one - all of your points on valid on this one and I agree wholeheartedly - don't know what has happened to this world sometimes.

Used to be when you won an award or a ribbon, it was because you finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd place - now they give trophies to any kid just because they played to help their self-esteem issues - what?

It is a tough world out there and we all learn from our beatings - those things set the bar high so you can work to achieve better than you did before.

Winnie: I agree with your comments too - your cancer analogy is sooo right!

What are we telling people when we lay down or teach people to lay down and it will be ok. Get me out of here long before that happens - sometimes I think I've lived too long already with what I see changing all around us.

Anyway, a good point of view. Good luck, John in all of the stuff you've got going, I'm still waiting to see how you are doing and still pulling for your success.

I think there is WAY too much emphasis put on HS sports and football in particular. They funnel so much money that could go to more educational uses that sports. While physical activities are important, this seems to be treated like it's the most important thing in the world while many of the kids (depending on where you live) can barely read. The slogan "The Three R's" is a prime example, only one of the "R's" actually begins with and "R".

I would love to see the parents get this worked up about how the schools do not have the resources to educate the kids instead of getting worked up about sports but the country is obsessed with football. I have had my sons involved with soccer and basketball (and also coached or helped coach both sports) and to see some parents almost coming to blows over a game with 8 and 9 year olds is sickening. I can understand about having kids involved in sports so they can learn how to work together as a team and to learn that it's not about winning but about giving it your best. Those are life lessons. I don't think it's right either to give kids a trophy for just showing up either, they should earn it. You don't get a raise for just showing up to work (at least I don't). Like the other week there was an uproar about a certain "person" asking kids in school to try hard, set goals, and to work hard in school. This was received by many as "a bad thing"? WTF???

Personally, I doubt I would not allow my kids to play football, the coaches drive the kids too hard to feed their own egos and often the kids wind up being in their teens or early 20s with blown out knees. If my kids came to me and asked to play I'd tell them to run into a brick wall a few times then get back to me.
I doubt I'd still let them play.

That's my opinion, as unpopular as I'm sure it will be, but since we are off-topic who cares?

    Trophies
Yeah, craig, I never understood why all the kids got trophies just for playing. It cheapens the work ethic of trying hard to succeed. Kinda like the whole "spreading the wealth" disease that's creeping into this country now.

    Hmmm.

    Hockey moms
are some of the worst! HA! When my son was in hockey I was so surprised at the behavior of some parents so my hubby and I sat waaaay apart from the fray. It was a tough group where we lived. Thankfully he took to track in high school and no parents get wild at track meets. My daughter is on the Nordic Ski team. We prefer quiet solo sports and stay out of the bruhaha.

I'd like to include the arts & humanities in your list of underfunded studies. My daughter just withdrew from high school and is now back schooling at home due to her senior year schedule consisting of 3 study halls, homeroom and only 2 academic classes. How's that for my tax dollars at work. The school keeps cutting academics to bare bones what choice do we have but do it at home.

    I Hear You Em
I sound like too much of a liberal (DIRTY WORD) already but I thought of the arts & humanities too. Nope, trample others and take no prisoners is the American way, gotta drill it into them young!
I would prefer sports like tennis or tack but there are things to be learned from team sports too like teamwork and sportsmanship. Football seems like unless you really stand out, you sit out. That's BS. But I agree, you don't get a medal for just showing up and that's what it's become. They shoot for the lowest denominator.

    Sports Rah Rah!
Name me a sport that I haven't played.....well, water polo I guess. I loved watching my son in hockey, baseball, soccer and football as a youngster. I love sports! Team sports were important to me growing up since that's where I excelled, where as at Math...what a dunce! But I feel badly looking back now at the kids who were picked last and the baggage that comes with that. I just have a problem with the inequity of sports $$ allocations and yes, FB seems to get all the glory. So I am pro team sports not just on how disproportionate funds seem to be. Thank goodness for Title 9 at least!

We have musicians and actors among my kids so the humanities and arts are so important to us, and thankfully the school that my oldest two went to were much stronger in theatre and choir than in football, but I know it's the exception. Boy, and did the community come out and support their endeavors. It was wonderful. Then we moved up here and it's the opposite.

Ok Phil, now don't think I'm kooky but you were in my dream last night. Isn't that funny? I can't remember the details but maybe it will come back to me. I know there were woods involved and looking for something....or a destination. Not sure.

Gotta run and get my little one to soccer practice! :-) (no, I don't drive a minivan)

    You kill me
I was always the last one picked and I'm okay. What I hated was in high school the guys on the football team were as dumb as rocks and got out of class and everything handed to them. My husband has told me that this has changed now in the schools. I am glad for that. I love the idea of sports in schools and other stuff too.
My son was and still is a gammer and into rock-in-roll. Chip off the old block. Love you all Paula

    It is all about dollars.
When 85,000 people at sixty five bucks a head will crowd into a stadium to watch mathematicians solve the Quadratic Equation. Then the emphasis will come off of sports.

Same goes for the entertainers whose only skill is that they can sing.

The truly important people quietly go about inventing microchips and cures for diseases.

Having said that I am a Sportsaholic. I am one of the ones who grew up with a Ball in my hand and pay sixty five bucks a pop to sit in the stadium.

I love to play sports and I love to coach with my husband and I love to go the a stadium and watch once in awhile the atmosphere and watching my husband and boys dig the games. Its totally different than than watching H.S. sports. My kids did soccer football, baseball and wrestling. My oldest loved baseball and was a great shortstop. Until the year I was on Chemo. His dad coached the team and another dad on the team was just and overbearing moron and yelled and screamed at the kids like they were dead dogs. My husband stepped up and told him not gonna happen on this field, so the other dad wanted to fight. Needless to say practices sucked, games bit and my son never played baseball again. Because of the other dad. It got so bad at one time the president of the league would step in between the my husband and the other man. My husband would not fight because it was not the correct thing to do, especially in front of all those kids. Personally, I think the needed his clock cleaned then maybe he'd stop, but he's the kind of guy nothing sinks in. My husband is also a correctional officer and knows what he can and cannot do. But the guys wife, tried to get in my face. I layed in a folding lawn chair at my sons games because I was so sick. Let me tell you, I have never got to my feet so fast, and felt so tall. When the lady realized that I towered over her by 3 ft she kind of re thought that she wanted to whip me. We laughed all day. I had had chemo 2 days prior to the game and it was my down day, she could have blown on me and I would have went down. LOL I believe what goes around comes around. That husband and wife had fallen into all kinds of personal problems and struggles, but I believe if you put out crap you get crap. Make it a great day!
