Dry Sleeve Questions

Do any of the other men on this site use a dry sleeve while showering to keep your PICC line dry? No offense ladies, please chime in also. I just figured us men are a tad bit harrier on our arms. How do you deal with it feeling like it's ripping all the hair from your fore arm? I'm about to shave my arms so I can put it on and take it off without it hurting.

    My husband was described by one of the nurses as a "hairy beast" and when they were going to put in his last PICC line before putting in another drain, he asked them to start the anesthesia first! Anyway, he will be shaving anything that will require taping from now on.

    I don't have one of those or any hair, but I am curious about keeping it dry- doesn't it get to the point where you don't have to worry about it? I had a port and after about week 2 it didn't matter if I got it wet. Now when the pump was hooked up I did, is that what you mean? Or is it always a problem

    Hi Patteee,

    I had to keep mine dry the entire time (11 mos). It's quite a bit different than a port. I didn't have the "hair" issue and still got very irritated by the tape. I think shaving would be the wise thing to do if its ok with the doctor. Sorry guys, I never thought about that additional discomfort.

    I had the same problem. First shave and second have them use cloth tape instead of silk tape it comes off way,way easier. Hope this helps.

    Hi guys and gals,
    I appreciate the feedback. I did ask about paper tape, but it seems like a no-go for the dressing. Kaiser uses a premade rectangular bandage of sorts that is clear on the top so they can see what's going on between treatments in the PICC line area.

    I think I will just shave the hair on my arms shorter but not all the way off, who knew my beard trimmmer could come in handy for my arms too.

    Shaved my arms
    and it really makes a difference. The Dry Sleeve is easier to put on and remove, it also holds the seal better.

    I didn't know about the dry sleeve. I used saran wrap and paper tape. Oh well whatever works. I have Kaiser also. Glad your new approach is working.
