No chemo today

I didn't get my chemo today, rescheduled for next week. My oncologist said my blood was barely OK and he does not want to knock be down too hard because of the diverticulitis complication. He did schedule an echocardiogram for tomorrow. My CA125 did go from 434 to 288 since the last chemo so it did knock it back. He wants to consult with the gyn/onc next week when I see him before scheduling another chemo of Doxil and see what the echo says. So another week off. Saundra

    Hello Saundra,

    Sorry to hear that your blood wasn't up to getting the chemo today. I got sent home last time also for the same reason. It's sort of like a mixed bag to me: I'm sorry I'm not getting the chemo for obvious reasons, but also feel some relief with getting more time off. I have the diverticulitis situation too. Does your doctor have you watch your diet, like not eating popcorn or peanuts, etc? My surgeon said he disagrees with watching your diet, and told me to eat what I want. Popcorn is one of my very favorite snacks, but I have only eaten about one cup recently.........colon surgery was about 4 months ago. I must say that it scared me though to eat it, so it wasn't as enjoyable as I was dreaming it would be. ha What's your thoughts?

    I was wondering if you had an initial echocardiogram before you started Doxil? When I was on the Doxil clinical trial, we had to do that first, plus have an EKG before every treatment. Is that the same with you?

    Are you feeling pretty good? Sure hope so...........Hugs, MM

    Sorry to hear that your chemo was cancelled, but the good news is one dose knocked it for a loop and maybe you can go on an every other week routine. How are you feeling otherwise?

    No diet
    No special diet was given by any of my doctors, but I chew peanuts very carefully. I did not have an initial heart check in anyway but already knew that my EKG shows that I have had one of the women's silent heart attacks in the past or else I have been weird all my life. Even with the EKG's before surgery and in the hospital with the diverticulitis, I was weird on the read out....but never referred to a cardiologist. One will read this echo though. I may have to try another chemo because Doxil is hard on the heart...will depend on what the gyn/onc thinks next week when I see him. Saundra

    I am feeling better but still get out of breath easily. I only get chemo every 4 weeks this time around.
    We may go to every 5 or 6 weeks if I get too weak. My blood counts were not up to normal but were in the range for chemo today but had to check out the heart first. Scheduled for next week. Because I had a week in the hospital in May from diverticulitis, I am in a weakened condition and the oncologist does not think that I have recovered totally from that yet either. Saundra

    Hi Saundra,
    I'm glad that your doctor is being cautious, and doing the additional test and consult.

    Better to be safe, and the short break fro chemo will give your blood a chance to recover.

    It's promising that the Doxil worked so well on your CA125, it seems that's the right chemo for you.

    Saundra,

    My first time around I had treatment every four weeks. My onc usually does it that way so as to give her patients more time for bone marrow to recupe.

    Sorry to hear about your weakened condition (glad you are feeling better), but know I do pray for you and will continue to pray for strength.

    I did get a mixture of doxil plus carboplatin. Doxil is hard on the heart, I read. I hope you do better on it. Saundra

    Hi Saundra,

    I read your post, and was reminded of the time I went to visit my friend during one of her chemo sessions. I took a couple of small milkshakes for her and myself, and then found that her counts were too low, and she had gone home (this is before either of us had cell phones). My first reaction was to be scared - where could she be? I didn't want her to not be there-she needed her chemo! I handed the shakes to other chemo patients, and was relieved to hear that she was scheduled to come back a few days later.

    If I could, I'd bring you a milkshake for your next chemo session! I hope all goes well with your blood rebuilding, and that those numbers continue keep dropping!

    I hope so too
    I had my echogram, ekg (or whatever it is where they put the wires on you) and head off tomorrow to get the doxil. I have very mixed feelings.....
