I heard public gyms are considered a no-no, but that exercising is good for you, if you can tolerate it. I admire you, Vicki, and anyone else that goes to a gym and is committed to exercising. I hate exercise!! I would definitely ask your Onc. Let us know what the verdict is when you do. ♥ Pammy0 -

I am with your hubby on this one~ our white cells get depleted and we have no infection fighting capacity, and ya know, aside from the "regular" germs in public places, I think I would be concerned about Swine Flu as well. Better safe than sorry and all that! LOL
If you have On Demand , they have some great exercise programs right in the privacy of your own home! From dance, to walking to full on hard to do work outs. I know it isn't the same as the things at a gym, but it is also way better than not doing anything, either!
My local YMCA has a program called Well-Fit. It is a 12 week FREE program with a trainer designed specifically for those in treatment, or just finishing treatment. I think the window was up to a year out of treatment. You might check with your oncologist and the Y if there is one near you. Exercise is a good thing, and if you are already a gym member, you already know that! So, as with all things, balance and sometimes permission is needed to make sure that you are getting the needed exercise, without putting your immune system in jeopardy! Good luck and let us know what you find out! Your onco doc might be pusing you toward the gym, for all I know! LOL

From what I know and have been told, you should avoid going to a gym. There are too many "cooties". Ok, germs that are floating around and that is the last thing you need on chemo. Try to exercise at home, even just taking walks.

I am just having rads, no chemo, and my radiation oncologist made sure that I wasn't even going to a gym, which I am not. Too many germs there!

After enduring a long winter, we love to spend time outside, walking and hiking, when the weather is better. This allows you to exercise but in fresh air. Even in the drizzle, a rain jacket will keep you dry and comfortable.

Be sure and do what your oncologist says, and, I will almost guarantee you that he will tell you not to go. Let us know.

Hey Vicki, have a look at the thread "taxotere and neuropathy". I posted some info about how to avoid neuropathy from chemo and it explains how we get it. (increased blood flow and chemo leaking into tissue) So if you want to work out you might want to wait ~ week after your tx to avoid this.0 -

to the gym, but YES to other exercise such as walking and biking in the fresh air.
The YMCA that I belong to was kind enough to put my membership on hold while I am getting treatments. Good luck!0 -
I am the original gym rat,
I am the original gym rat, but I had to stop going due to low energy level.
I am still working at a rather demanding job, so I need to save all my energy for that.
I am trying to stetch at home & maybe will do some floor exercises. A few surgeries ago (not cancer related) I worked out at home with a Pilates tape & felt that it helped me keep my strength up.I would say "no" to the gym, but try to get some workouts on your own. wish you the best..0 -

I would only go to the gym if I brought my own personal anti-bacteria hand gel with me. I know that the gym I use has paper towels and does have spray bottles to wipe down the equiptment after use.0 -

I wouldnt take that chance. Its a good thought that you are still wanting to go while you are in treatment, but not worth risking your health over. Maybe come up with routines you can do at home? I dont know, i know i just sound corny.

There are so many dvd's these days that you should be able to get an adequate workout at home, especially if you have weights/resistance bands to work with.
Another tip I got from a doc that I work with. DO NOT use the pens at the pharmacy to sign any of those things they ask you to sign, use your own. Think about, untold numbers of sick people use those pens to sign for prescriptins for antibiotics and what ever.0 -
