The hardness may be scar tissue Pat. That would be just a guess on my part. And, you are only out of surgery 5 weeks, so, I would think some pain would still be expected. When is your next doctor's appointment? You might just give him a call and ask these questions to put your mind at ease. That is what he is there for. Let us know.

I had a lumpectomy 7 YEARS
I had a lumpectomy 7 YEARS ago, and it is still and always sensitive to the touch....it is something I just live with, as I don't want to take pain meds all the time. That wouldn;t be good for my liver, and so I ignore it unless it is ultra sensitive and then I take an Advil or something.
BTW, is there any chance that you might please try and type without using all capital letters? The super large letters are actually harder for me to read, and I certainly don't want to ignore any of your posts! I often hit my "lock caps" on the keyboard by mistake when I should be hitting the "shift" key, so I know I have been guilty of all caps too, sometimes! But, I think most of us will agree that it is harder to read than the regular size font. Just a thought!
If you decide to call your Dr about your lumpectomy pain, please let us know what he says!

Pat, my lumpetomy was on July 21 this year, and there's still a good deal of tenderness. And at times I feel some odd twinges. Not exactly pain, not exactly itching either, similar to what you describe...a sort of jabbing sensation, almost like a little needle got left in there? [but I know that didn't happen]. The surgeon scooped out a large section of my left breast, so I have just chalked it up to the ongoing healing process. And it feels so much different from my "good" side, because some lymph nodes were removed too.
Maybe this is another "new normal" for us...peculiar pains and other phanthom feelings, that no one else experiences if they haven't had this kind of treatment?

The jabbing pain is quite common after a lumpectomy. I have had it after all of my biopsies and lumpectomies. At times, it almost took my breath away. But, it didn't last long, and I stopped having them after a couple months.

I know exactly what you mean about the jabbing sensation. I asked my surgeon, and he said that's various nerve endings regenerating after the surgery. It can continue for a short time, or be more long-term. I had a lumpectomy on April 21, and I still get an occasional "zap". No big deal.

Hi, I am 5 weeks from lumpectomy and node removal too, and still have on and off soreness, also have some of the shooting pains, and a HARD area around the scar, I was also told it was pretty normal, and from what I have read here, it can go on for some time, and maybe like "Chen" said it never really leaves, I am sure we will all have both physical and emotional scarring from this journey, this message board has made it all bearable though.

Its been about 3 weeks - lumpectomy and I too have pains
I am not healing as quickly as I thought. My breast cancer specialist, no general surgeron who sliced and diced me .. suggested that I wear a bra .. 24 hours .. soft running/athlete. It has helped. I am still very very sensitive, tissue is lumpy and hard. Dr. H, states this is part of the healing process. I am not very worried, as I will be having a bi lateral mac'tmy sometime early next year.

I am still a little sore and I just started radiation treatments which might make it a little worse. But, it is bearable. I don't have any hardness around my scar though. It is almost gone actually. It probably is just scar tissue. Call your oncologist if it worries you.

I think some pain is normal. It hasn't been very long Pat since your surgery. And, like some posted, they still have some pain after years. But, call your doctor and ask him if you are really worried.

As everyone has written, it is normal, I would assume, to still have some pain. I know that I still have a little pain from my lumpectomy and my rads oncologist said it is normal for me with the surgery and then with the rads. Talk to your doctor Pat. Hope you get this resolved.

How are you feeling? I think just to be on the safe side you should call your surgeon about the hardness and increased pain. I had a double mastectomy and did have the same stabbing pain, but not hardness. I know these are totally different procedures, so the post op symptoms are probably quite different too. I just hope you are feeling better today. And i think its time for me to take a break, my postings tonight are really corny!!
