Update from my Mom's surgery
My Mom had her hysterectomy yesterday. They were suspecting uterine sarcoma based on a cat scan report. My Mom has had huge fibroids for years (she's 54), and apparently the radiologist interepreting the report did not know about the history of these fibroids. Whether this makes a difference or not, I don't know.
So, my Mom went through a 4 hour surgery yesterday. The gynocologic oncologist who did the surgery talked to us after. He thinks everything is benign! He thinks this because her fibroids have grown into several areas outside of the uterus including growths between loops of bowel (she had to have 2 different colon resections during surgery), and these growths attached all the way up through her omentum. He said he could tell these must of been growing for a very long time, and that is what is leading him to believe it's not malignant.
We are waiting for the pathology report to be certain. The doctor said that tissue samples were not frozen, they were sending them out for a more thorough analysis. I'm not sure of the difference between those 2 methods though.
Just wanted to update everyone. I hope the doc is right, and it's not cancer. My fingers are crossed!

Your Mom
Hope your Mother recovers quickly from the surgery. Be glad they sent the specimen out instead of relying on frozen sections. Frozen sections are done quickly and are not a definitive answer to pathology. They sometimes help a surgeon decide the extent of surgery they are going to do. I hope everything comes back just fine.0 -

Mom's surgery
Hi:
I'm so glad for you and your Mom. My Mom is the one who is in remission from breast cancer. My surgery was the same day as your Mom's and I'm also waiting for the pathology report. The doctor did not see any cancer outside of the uterus so if that is the case I will be in stage 1. However, my cells are a Grade 3 so still waiting to hear about any future treatment.
Did your Mom have the robotic surgery? That's what I had. I was home Thursday afternoon. My husband is in his glory because I need an injection of Arixtra for 14 days to prevent blood clotting. (He has training as an EMT/Paramedic). His joke is that now he literally "gets under my skin". I think he feels like he's doing something for me regarding actual treatment not just the housework, cleaning, shopping, etc.
Does your Mom need this injection as well?
Since I have been home, I feel like I've been pampered. I'm sure you're doing the same for Mom. Just remember to take care of yourself.
God bless you and your Mom,

That's great you got to come home the day after surgery. My mom did not have the robotic surgery. She was just discharged home from the hospital today (she spent 5 nights there!). She could not wait to get out of there. She did not get an ounce of sleep while there!
We are waiting on the pathology results still. That's great that you are in stage 1. I wish you well with your treatment if you need any. Did they say what you might need for it being grade 3?
My Mom does not need to be on arixtra. She was taking coumadin to avoid blood clots prior to the surgery, so she will need to take that. She was getting shots of lovenox while in the hospital.
Wishing you good health and good results.

Hi Leanne:
I was so glad to go home the next day nether mind staying for a total of 5 days. Like your Mom I'm still waiting for the pathology report so it's not definite that I'm stage 1 but I'm hopeful. I'll be calling the doctor tomorrow to see if it's in. My next appointment is next week for a follow up
And yes I will probably need chemo since it's a grade 3. My Mom has been helping me prepare for it since she's been there. My doctor is very good and has the newer techniques and if I do need chemo it will be in the ab. From doing research I understand that this is the best method to prevent the cancer from returning. I'm all for that! Besides losing my hair my biggest concern is fighting the flu, etc while on chemo. I work with children in Florida (near Clearwater) and they are walking germ factories. When I find out more about future treatments I will let the doctor know my concern in this area. Where I work we have approx 80-90 children at a time in the cafeteria. It's a before/after school program. Just today a pregnant woman died from the Swine Flu in St. Petersburg which is only 45 minutes from my house. One day at a time.
Take care of yourself! Remember I've been in both places. I can see with my husband how tired and worried he is during this ordeal. As a caretaker, you feel helpless. As a patient you just want to fight this cancer and go on with your life.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your Mom.
