This is a tad graphic, but I'm desperate!

Oh Gail
Hi Gail
I hear your pain...and I understand it too. This probably won't help, but the first 2 years after my rectum resurgery, it was sheer torture - like if Life was like this, then I don't want to go in anymore...the unbelievable pressure that makes you scream, the constipation so bad, and the diahrrea when it was so bad. I could barely work and could never go to someone's house for an overnight stay or a visit - you start screaming like that and people would flip out at first, and would just never quite understand I found.
I had radiation prior to my resection, so the combo of those 2 put the whammy on the new bowel and it has taken me literally 5 years for it to be what it is today - mine was a difficult case and I had no ostomies temp or permanent. So my bowel never got to rest, and so recovery has taken many years for me.
I took Milk of Magnesia and sometimes Dulcolax. There were some type of suppositories, can't remember the name, that you could take that would help you go. Enemas are hard to give yourself, but if you can try one, then there is a Fleet's enema that has 2 applications in the box, that does help some.
The only other thing might be a bowel cleanser like you would use for a colonoscopy. If that did not work, then I would go to the hospital.
You've probably already tried these, but just wanted to mention them. I'm so sorry that you are in such pain...when this part of the body is upset, it messes up your whole world.
I hope someone has some better advice behind me...the big thing for me was TIME. As I said the first 2 years, I paid the price...years 2-5 it got better but could act up at any time with any condition.
Just an extra...I took a vacation day yesterday so I could see the Dallas Cowboys practice in their new stadium...we had planned for it...well don't you know that things "acted up" just a couple of hours before we had to go and I was "sick" many times...I just had to ride the waves and then lay down a few minutes in between and after a couple of hours, it settled down. My point is that it STILL can strike anytime and anywhere. That's what make planning our lives a little more difficult sometimes.
I wish I could offer you more...I hope someone has an absolute for you.

You're going to change the way you deal with this. No more waiting until you're completely backed up to take action. I completely understand your symptoms. The body's urge to go when fully backed up is powerful, I passed out once from the pain and pressure.
I can't help you with your current blockage, that's something the Drs will need to do, once it's clear I can help.
---- Don't let it get built up. You're probably gonna go 3-4 days without going once everything has passed, once those 3-4 days have gone by, take action. Take liquid fiber, colace, drink lots of water, juice some fresh fruit, eat only sparingly for the next few days, keep juicing, drinking water, liquid fiber and colace until you go. You may need to eat a bit to trigger the movement but keep those meals down to olives, fiber bars, yogurt with pribiotics, things of that nature. If your're taking any pain meds you'll need to stop or cut back for a few days. This may last for several days to a week, just keep trying until you go. Get some good coconut juice and coconut milk, drink it everyday. If they don't have any at your grocery store you can find it at an asian grocery store. If you're not allergic to coconut, you should be drinking it and eating it everyday for your IBS. Once you've had your movement continue your soft diet half a day, then have continue to mix your regular diet with your soft diet. If you go more than a few days without going, switch back to your soft diet. Eventually you will be able to find a happy median.0 -
Does the pain come and go...like labor?
My first time that happened (I ended up having 9 of them, but cleared all but the first myself), I didn't know what it was...it was 6 months since my resection...ended up with a total small bowel obstruction...the pain was horrific and it came in waves...then a gurgling, like I was hungry, except lower.
Have you called your surgeon (the one that did the resection)? Maybe he/she can get to the 'bottom' of it...teehee (sorry).
If you get an 'all clear' on that...well, I realized that partly my troubles were caused from too little fluids...so I ramped up my fluid intake, and it seemed to help...

Constipation
I am only giving you the truth about my case. I had always had contipation throughout my life BEFORE my cancer DX. I would always have to take some sort of laxative but never had the pain you described until I was completed obstructed (like you) and could not go NOT even with all the laxatives in the world.
CT Scan didn't even show my tumor or x-ray, so my advice is to get your doctor or ER as soon as possible, because if the X-Ray showed you were totalled blocked your colon could be rupture. Don't want to scar you, but that is what my surgeon told me. I was very lucky that it did not rupture.0 -

...I know that feeling of pain, I spent 3 weeks in the hospital because of it. My doctor said if I hadn't waited 3-4 days before I went to the hospital, I may have never needed the surgery to unblock, but because I waited so long, and took that pain all those days, it wouldn't unkink itself, since sometimes it can resolve itself usually they said, so please don't wait, and just go to the ER, you don't want to end up going through what I did..it sucked.
Hugsss!

2 years since your
2 years since your resection? When was the last time you had a colonoscopy? What you are describing is the same thing I had before they dx'd that I was almost totally obstructed. And the regular xray taken 2 days before the colonscopy showed me very very constipated- the tumor did not show up. In fact the only time a red flag came back on a regular xray was the one they did right before emergency surgery. It showed "no free air" meaning an obstruction. Do you work with a regular doc or a gastro one? I know a large part of of my Mayo colorectal surgeon's practice is actually IBS or IBD. She basically is the ONLY one I trust with my colon-0 -
praying for you
Gail,
I'm sorry to hear you're in such pain. I am praying for you right now- that you'll get help and/or relief very soon, and that the pain will subside. I haven't had the colon surgery, so I can't give any pointers on that issue.
Take care,

So you didn't go to the practice at all? Bummer. Sorry that happened.

Sorry for your pain
I really understand your problem. I have constipation a lot of the time. For me nothing works all the time. But I do drink a lot of water and walk. Somtimes that helps and sometimes it doesn't. Currently I have a rash in that most delicate area and only sitting in hot water and baby powder make it possible to even walk.
By all means talk to your doctor. I saw a colonoscopy mentioned on the board and maybe you should have one....maybe not. I will be having my fifth colonoscopy in less than a year in December.
don't give up on the doctors and Please! don't give up on yourself.
Praying for you!

Thanks Janet
I see that I did not mention that - things settled down and we went out to the new stadium and saw the Cowboys practice for a few hours...so yep we got to go.
Sorry I failed to mention that, I blanked out.

prumes, juice, hot tea, lots of water, docolex- I take it every Friday, takes care of the problem before it is a problem. Toddler suppositories, help me.
Sorry for you pain, I have been there.0 -
exercise helps
I know it sound impossible right now but if you can manage to start walking even a little it will help. Movements creates movement. Also, I would lay in a warm bath to help with the pressure. I too had the incredible pressure, just like giving birth. I had four naturally so I know the pain. I would keep taking colace as a softer and exercise as much as you can
Good luck and God bless you.
