I am a 6 year breast cancer survivor. I have just recently finished taking 5 years of a anti-cancer drug called fareston. Now my oncologist is suggesting I start a new drug called reclast or zometa. I have read all the possible side effects, etc. and I need to know if anyone has taken either of these drugs and how they reacted to them. Any feedback will be helpful. Thanks

Well, I took Fosamax for 4
Well, I took Fosamax for 4 years, it gave me GERD. I have osteopena. When I told my Nurse practitioner that i wasn't taking fosamax anymore because of the GERD she wanted me to try RECLAST. So, I don't know. My Medical oncologist I will see is also a Hemotologst. He is this kool Japaneese guy. He is soft spoken and very knowledgable. I actually watch a podcast of sorts that was on a local TV program called Talk with your Dr. So, I was able to see what my Surgeon and Medical oncologist looked and talked like before I met them. So, it's very possible he will recomend RECLAST for me also. Since I take a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) for my GERD, and that in itself can weaken bones, then having to take probably Arimidex which ALSO weakens the bones. sheesh, it never ends.

    taking reclast or zometa
I should probably clarify my problem. My oncologist has suggested I take Arimidex and along with that I would have to take reclast or zometa. I can not in all good faith take the arimidex after having taken the fareston (anti-estrogen) for five years. The list of side effects I'm afraid far outweight the good that the arimidex might do. Please respond if you have taken arimidex also. Thanks!!!

    Hi..I have been on Zometa
Hi..I have been on Zometa for a year now, I still need to get monthly injections for the next 2-3 years. I have breast cancer and it had spread to my bones.. I have had no problems, my legs may ache for a couple days but nothing major. I have to have blood drawn monthly also. Each drug we take has side effects, but the benefits of this drug outweighs those effects. Hope this helps.

    Hey Car
I have now idea what Amidex is. However, my surgeon has suggested that I start Zometa because I am starting this journey with osteoporosis. I'm also on Femara.

While I don't have bone mets that I know of, my feeling is: What is the point of surviving cancer only to have a back that looks like a question mark or suffer bone fractures.

As far as your GERD goes, dietary changes may help with that. It may also help if you look into vitamins or natural remidies. You must of course talk to your doc about these as they sometimes interfere with your course of treatment.
