It has beem a long and frightening road so far and I have just begun. On the bright side the journey has been two steps forward and one backwards. You ladies are troopers, thanks a whole lot.
    One question of a thousand, it seems the chemo treatment before surgery would make you weak???

    So with your lumpectomy you did not need any reconstruction?

    No MCJ, I didn't need reconstruction. I had a very small tumor and the incision is very tiny. It is hard to see even now, and, there wasn't that much breast tissue taken out since the tumor was small. I know one women on here, Cat, just had reconstruction on her breast and she had a lumpectomy. Sometimes from what I have read, they take quite a bit out and if a women is small breasted, it can leave your breast looking bad. My plastic surgeon told me up front, as best he could, where the incision would be, how big and how my breast would look afterwords. He did a great job! Good luck!

    MCJ........My surgeon,oncologist and radiation oncologist all told me that with a smaller tumor that a mastectomy provided a no longer survival rate than a lumpectomy, which is what I had in May. My tumor was 2.2 cm....I just finished my chemo and start rads in September..as everyone says, it is a PERSONAL decision. Just take your time and do what you feel is right for you.......

    Do you know what kinda gets me? They say with either a lumpectomy and RADs or a mastectomy you still have a 30% chance of Cancer re-occurring in same or more likely the other breast, but a different kind. Why can't they say a 70% chance you will be fine. My cousin had DCIS the first time in her one breast, she had a lumpectomy and RADS. several years later she had the Lobular kind in her other breast, also had a lumpectomy. Now her General surgeon was going through a divorce and He told her when they realised there was a spark between them he could not be her Dr. and her friend and take things to a relationship level, so, she was interested in him and asked him to refer her to a collegue. the rest is history. They have been married since June of 1998. He is a great guy. But she is now going through a lot, she had distant metasties and is getting chemo, so I am hoping she makes it through this. I hope you kind ladies will pray for her. Her name is Christina and she lives in Carmichael,Calif.

    Welcome MCJ, it sounds like you Dr. is setting you on the right course of action. Since it has already entered the lymph node, maybe the CHEMO first will stop it from spreading anymore. None of us want to be a member of the BC club, but I think these ladies here are great.
