Hi All! This is my first time on your message board. My oldest sister has been diagnosised with lung cancer. She is in stage 4. My question is where can she find financial help with expenses and possible help with burial expenses. (I don't want to think of her death but if something happened and help was needed where can we look for help with this?) She is 57 years old and has survived several strokes. She isn't able to work and now she has lung cancer. Does
anyone know of any organizations who help someone like this? Any suggestions will be greatly appricated.
Thanks,
Phyllis E.

You might consider checking out the following:

    http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Support/financial-resources

This site is put up by the National Institute of Health or some such, and is government-supported.

Cancer Care, a non-profit org., offers free support and counseling for cancer patients by oncology social workers. They have face-to-face counseling and counceling on the phone. Support groups on the phone are available too and are moderated by an oncology social worker. Call 800-813-HOPE. They can also give you info about financial resources. Check their website: www.cancercare.org

Gilda's Club - www.gildasclub.org - they offer free social and emotional support. Not sure if they have financial information but check it out just in case.

    Live Strong - www.livestrong.org - offers one-on-one support.

American Cancer Society (here) can also give you financial, support, etc. information available in different cities.

These may at least be good places to start.

Best wishes to your sister and her family.

    Take care,

    Joe

    Financial Assistance
Gosh! Thanks so much! Thats a wealth of information.
When you get the news someone you love is diagnosed with cancer it seems all good sense goes out the window and I just couldn't put two brain cells together to be able to find the help my sister needs.
Your great for answering so quickly. I appricate it so much.
Best wishes to you and yours.

    You bet!
Please keep us posted on sis's condition, and be advised that cancer is not necessarily a death sentence, even though we think it is when first we hear the dreaded words.

    Take care,

    Cancer Diagnosis
I will try to keep updates on my Sisters condition. She feels she is going to die from this and she is preparing herself for it, although she says shes going to fight it. I've told her WE can beat this. Others have and she can. Still she feels like she isn't going to make it I think.
She lives in Texas and I live in Alabama so it feels like I'm on the other side of the moon. I've been researching EVERYTHING I can find on cancer to see what she can do to beat this monster again. {She had cervical cancer when she was 27 and they got it all then} I told her this wasn't no thing. We can kick its butt again. She's 56 now and had several strokes. I think thats why she she feels she isn't going to beat it. Shes too old and frail now she thinks.
I'm curious how is everyone else here on the message board dealing with a cancer diagnosis in the family or on their selves? I'd love to hear everyones stories.
My sister is more like a mother to me because she raised me. So this is difficult for me.
We had a brother die recently from a stroke at 50 yrs old and a sister killed at 48 years old in a terrible head on car wreck. My sister took both of their deaths very hard and I think she is ready to die and be with them.

I really want to hear from anyone on how you deal with a cancer diagnosis in the family.

Thanks for listening and for your help soccerfreaks!

    God Bless,
    Phyllis
