Depression

I was diagnosed with cancer of the uterus 5 weeks ago and had a complete hysterectomy 4 weeks ago. I also went off all hormone therapy and quit smoking. The biopsy of the organs and lymph nodes that were removed showed cancer in the uterus only but not in the lymph nodes. My doctor said that I might want to consider radiation therapy but he wasn't sure about it. He said that even though the cancer was in the uterus only it was an agressive kind. So since then I have been very anxious and depressed due to all of the things I have gone through in the past few weeks and it is all new to me. I am not sure how worried that I should be.I would appreciate any input that anyone has for me. Thanks

    Your treatment decisions
    You need to get a copy of your pathology report. If you have papillary serous and are greater than a stage 1A chemotherapy is recommended and this is backed by alot of research. I am not sure what your cancer exactly is. There are standards of care for the stage you are in. Keep searching this web site; Many of the gals have posted what current standards are and where to find that. Also, your oncologist should really be aware of the standards. I think you need to do more research; get a second opinion also. Now is the time to be an advocate for yourself. Chemo is do-able. Most of us have been through it. It's stressful but now is the time to throw yourself into it and make the best decision you can.

    I would take the radiation and be happy about it.

    In all of my reading on the internet about uterine cancer I have found stories of women who had the hysterectomy, etc and after the pathology is completed, the doctors said, "we got it all" so no further treatment was done. Unfortunately the doctors were wrong in some of these instances and these woman had their cancer "return" years later when they weren't suspecting it and the cancer was now of an advanced stage.

    When a pathologist does his thing on the tissues he can only section so much of the tissue, put it under the microscope and take a look. He is searching for microscopic cells. A pathological inspection of the tissue is not an absolutely complete summary of what is going on.

    So I would take the radiation especially if it was an aggressive type of cancer. And, frankly I'd ask if I could take chemo as well.

    I would do the same. I have to know that I have done everything I possibly can do. Then, if it returns I won't kick myself for not doing what the doctors advised. That is just how I live with it.
