Pat, I feel your pain...
Pat, I feel your pain... shortly after... (very shortly after) my dx I too had to go through the dreaded colonoscopy... I'm sorry.. I don't know that it is a standard test due to the dx, I had to have one about 5 years ago and they had removed palups (sp?) I was supposed to go back after 3 yrs, but I didn't ... Dr caught me, and I had to do it... I received an honest 5 year pass this time... I'm so sorry... the proceedure it self isn't bad it's that darned prep...
♥ & hugs,

UGH. Yes, the stuff you have
UGH. Yes, the stuff you have to drink is nasty. Make sure it's cold, and drink it fast but of course catch your breath inbetween. LOL. I had mine in Feb. this year. No polyps. I had an EGD also, I have mild erosions on my esophagus. I had what looked like an ulcer in my stomach, he biopsied it, it was negative. So, at least I could tell my Oncology Dr. that much. But, this GI Dr. wasn't paying attention when I showed him the lump on my abdomen on my right side. I even put my hand right on it and showed him and asked him what is this? I am so mad he could have ordered the CT scan back then, now I will have to contend with a hernia surgery and RADS! ARRGH! UGH, the barium I had to drink was almost as bad as the salty lemon water for the bowel prep!OH, and for the CT scan, I also had IV contrast! Tell me that's not a weird feeling, the saline goes in, not too bad, then the other, you get like a quick sting(barely botherd me) then you feel a total flush and you feel like you peed yourself, but you didn't.
But, I guess they want to cover all bases. At least with the CT scan everything looked good except for the hernia.0 -
Yes,Pat
I had an appointment with my surgeon yesterday and it was the first time she'd asked if I'd had a colonoscopy yet. I had my first colonoscopy a little over a year ago and they found a polyp. My surgeon believes in the 3 year wait also(especially because of the polyp).
She told me that since I've had breast cancer and now have a history, there is more of a risk.
Yeah,I know! Sucks, doesn't it... But if it means possible early detection I will do it! Just wish the prep was a little easier-that stuff does taste nasty-and yes, stay by a toilet the whole day before your procedure! The procedure itself is nothing to worry about.0 -

I guess just the thought of someone poking around in there is agonizing. I wonder what kind of a person is it who makes their life's work poking around people's you know whats. EWWW. My Mom had 3 of them done and for 2 of them she had to drink this stuff the entire day before. I understand now they have one drink (icky taste)and it works like the gallon jug she had. I am going to try to schedule it for a Monday so I can stay in on Sunday and drink it. If not, I will lose two days from work and can't afford that. I need to have it done before December. Today is oncologist day and I'll talk to her about it. She keeps telling me to make a gyn appointment. Right now I feel ENOUGH DOCTORS! Give me a couple of month's break! But then again, get it done and over with. Oh well! Thanks ladies for your thoughts and help, I don't feel so alone in this when I can bounce feelings off of youse guys. Thanks!

Mr DeMille, I'm Ready For My Close-up!
Yes...and good for your Dr for being proactive on this! The prep for this is the worst part of the journey ( and the journey isn't long; just 2 and from the bathroom! LOL) And then IF there is something ( polyps) they take care of them then and there while you are still in a big twilight place! They only need to do this once every 10 years, so you might as well "git er done". And in case you are embarrassed thinking of the procedure~ just consider what your DR will be looking at! Puts things in perspective! So make that appointment for the Booty-Cam; it's important!
Hugs,

Get it scheduled for in the morning - sooner the better. That way, you can start your prep at about 6:00 pm the previous night and you won't have to sit around all day with your stomach talking to you to feed it.

Hi Pat
I had a colonoscopy last June and they found 3 polyps and removed them. Mine was scheduled because I was over 50 and my obgyn thinks she is a real doctor and decided to set it up. I would have pushed it off otherwise. I need to repeat in 3 years unless oncology wants it done sooner.
As far as the prep goes, I was given a choice between taking pills every 15 minutes apart followed by 8 ounces of water or the liquid. I chose the pills. I think it was 4 of them every 15 minutes for about 1 hour then you have to push fluids and to the whole clear liquid thing.
They gave me demerol and versed to sedate me. The prep and the procedure went just fine but I had a sensitivity to the demerol and had a hard time waking up. There were 80 year olds coming and going before I could get myself out of the bathroom.
Anyway, dont sweat it. My reaction to the sedation I dont think is typical
Have a nice day

I ,also, had the pills and although drinking so much water so close together was hard, At least there was no bad taste. That's the way I'll go again when it has to be done. The actual procedure is easy as you sleep thru it. HUGS!! Cathy0 -
Get the screening!
This is a definate good thing, even though I agree that the prep is nasty nasty. I just don't care for the jug of salty lemon water stuff at all. But I've survived several of these things. If they find a polyp before it turns beastly, they can honestly prevent cancer with this test. Contrast this with tests like CAT scans and mammograms that can only find cancer after it has started and you will begin to see it as a good test. If you turn out to be fine, it will be another 10 years before you have to do it again.
My sister the doctor told me that unfortunately folks with a cancer diagnosis are at a somewhat higher risk of having other cancers in the future. So do the test. Good luck!
