A bit more of normal....

Day before yesterday, a friend of mine set up a 12:00 tee time for us to play golf!!!!

In my 'other' life before cancer, I had played, even have clubs. So, I'm at the driving range, and whap! every ball ended up hooking to the right. We just played 9 holes, and I am now looking for a pro that can help with my game...I realized that this post-cancer body of mine, with a different left arm (from the node removal for the breast cancer), and my abdominal muscles pulled around (from the resection), has changed everything about my game.

I was sort of dreading even going yesterday, but did much self-talk about 'I stood up to cancer...this is minor in comparison!!!!!' It is another step in going on with life...and my friend was so nice and patient about my 'flying balls'. It was a wonderful course, with a farm on one side, and a beautiful lake on the other...of course, to add to the challenge, everything was in dutch...lol!

Yesterday and today, I'm a bit sore, but have great resolve that I will prevail over this, as well!!! And today, at a swap meet, I even bought a set of clubs to leave here....I WILL win over this, too.....LOL

    Swings change

    I know my swing changed after my double mastectomy with tissue expanders. I always put my arms over my boobs but now I have to put them to the side because they don't squish anymore. It takes time to figure out how to swing--I also have to watch out for my port and not bring my right arm too close to my body. So now I am doing better golfing and hope tomorrow I can golf well at the tournament I am in "Teeing it up for Ta Ta's" breast cancer tournament and the proceeds go to local breast cancer organizations. Most of the people playing are either breast cancer survivors or has a family member that has been diagnosed. My sister, Martha, is going to help out--she does not golf--so she will be a spotter or helper somewhere on the course.

    You're getting back to life, Kathi! Awesome-tastic!

    I don't know much about golf, but I would guess that your swing would surely be affected. Good for you for working on correcting it and enjoying life again...

    My Reggie is out playing golf now. I don't understand it, at all! I have gone with him about a dozen times, and my strategy is to take a book and ride in the cart. About hole 4 I am already getting "antsy" and wish I were someplace else! I have no desire to play~ though about 2 years ago I did play in a night tournament for charity with glow in the dark golf balls. I felt sorry for the other 2 players on our "team" when they heard it was my First time playing, ever! They were hoping I was kidding, and that I was a ringer~ oh well! I didn't enjoy the game, but they never knew that, as I laughed and never did apologize for not having a clue as to what I was doing! There was a father/daughter tournament at Pebble Beach; Reggie begged and pleaded with his daughter to learn to play~ she looked at him as if he had lost his mind! She was in the night tourney too, and never went back for more, either! I do go with Reggie once each year to watch Tiger Woods and the other big names play for charity...and I appreciate the look on Reggie's face! He is like a 6 year old at Disneyland, and of course, the beauty of the golf course is something to behold.
    I once heard it said that golf cannot be called a sport. And why? How can you call anything a sport where you can hold the fans back with a String and "shhhhh" them??? That made me laugh so hard!!

    That having been said, I am sure your physical self has been altered, and with a few lessons under your belt, you will give anyone who is playing with you a run for their money! And, don't fret, it's always hard to get that little ball in the clown's mouth! LOL

    Knowing you, will will soon be where you want to be, and have a great time!!!

    Sounds like you had a great time regardless of your swing. I never got into it. My dad was an avid golfer, he even took the joke as his own that we would die on the golf course and the others in his group would have to "hit the ball, drag Louie" through the rest of the course. Almost happened, his last good day was golfing, so did play to the end.
    He used to take us as kids, none of us liked it, but I do love a good game of mini golf!
    Sounds like you are having a great time over there, when are you coming home?

    You mean there is golf after breast cancer? I thought my golfing and tennis days were over!

    Wow you guys really give me hope that I can get some of my former life back after double mastectomy and chemo...

    Maybe next summer

    I had a double mastectomy Feb. 2, 2009 with tissue expanders at that time. I started chemo 3/10/09 and have played golf since the golf course opened here in Maine in April. Best exercise in my book. Walking and swinging and pushing a cart. Cardiovascular exercise.

    Next summer you will join both Kathi and I and others like Lili as well on the golf course.

    I am playing in a breast cancer tournament tomorrow.

    I don't know, but, I have heard that your golf swing will be off since you had a mastectomy.

    I think everyone is just cheating themselves when it comes to golf. Why are you only hitting the ball just a few times to get it in the hole? Whack that ball as many times as you can!! Get your moneys worth!!
    My hubby didn't like my theroy (hence it took too long) and has never taken me again. Teehee!!
    Glad you are out there playing, Kathi. You'll get a new swing in no time and be playing par or better soon!!
