SCARED FOR SURGERY

WELL THE DOCTOR TOLD US TODAY THAT SURGERY IS VERY LONG AND INTENSE, AN ALL DAY SURGERY, ICU FEEDING TUBE AND LOTS OF THINGS COULD HAPPEN I AM VERY SCARED AS A WIFE TO MY HUSBAND I WISH THIS WOULD ALL GO AWAY. THIS MAN IS ONLY 45 YEARS OLD WHY DOES HE HAVE TO SUFFER LIKE THIS ITS NOT SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN TO SOMEONE THIS YOUNG, ANY SUGGESTIONS OUT THERE FOR ONES THAT HAS HAD THIS TYPE OF SURGERY.

    thanks so much for taking the time to reply to a very scared wife. I live in tulsa Oklahoma, and I trust the surgeon very much but he is just putting the fear of GOD in me or i should say us. i have seen your replies on alot of things and you seem very knowledgeable on this thing we call "Cancer" sounds like you are hosting your own site. Yes i have met the 23 year old one she has been alot of help, we are always asking ourselves how did he get this, acid reflux, smoking drinking eetc, yes he is as scared as me but i cant seem to get him on this site to communicate. anything you can pass to me will be great

    The sutgery is very long. It is difficult. My wife was not talked to once during my surgery. She had to threaten someone for info. I made it thru. Sore as heck but I am here.Say a prayer and hope for best. Thanks Don M

    My surgery took about 6 and a half hours, but my doctors/hospital at Mayo were very good at updating my family throughout the surgery, they knew exactly what they were doing and how it was going.

    what is the surgery?
    can i ask what the surgery was? my loved one has stage 3 adenocarcinoma but will not talk about his treatment plan with me. he is 24 in sept and has been on oral chemo since jan 08. what i do know is the doctor gives him 3-4 days of heavy doses then backs off and that weekly blood tests are done and that is all the info i can get. i am very frustrated, but dan told me it scares him more when i ask or want to talk about it. he says he is handling it as best as he can and keeping the doctors accountable and doing as much research as possible. he is not letting me in much, but we talk every day and i hear him cough sometimes and the weakness in his energy. but this man works 6 sometimes 7 days a week. he is beyond stubborn and determined. thank you for any information you can share with me. i hope you are feeling better. you are an amazing woman!

    The surgery we all speak of is called an esophajectomy. The esophagus is removed, and the stomach is pulled up into the chest cavity and attached to whatever is left of the esophagus at the top to form a new tube. This can be done openly, through an incision in the stomach and an incision in the neck, which is what I had done...or, it can be done the minimally invasive way through small laproscopic incisions, which is the way William had it done. It is a long surgery, but is the ideal treatment route for esophageal cancer, particularly when caught in the earlier stages. MIne was stage 3 adenocarcinoma, but I still received surgery first, followed by radiation and chemo. This is the simplest explanation I can give you without going into all the little details...William has explained things further in some of his older posts. Hope this helps!
