chemo day 2 and 3 need help

Well,I can say all started out really well on the first day of chemo. Sean was hungry and ate some,however day two and the start of day three aren't not going as well. We have been dripping 5FU since about 12:30 Tuesday and by the end of day one going into day two thing have went down hill. He can no longer eat and drinking even to take pills is becoming troublesome. We have two types of sick pills (promthesine and Zolpran)of which neither is really helping.
He's back to throwing up again and feeling like crap. As it is 8:49 am now I except the infussion complete alarm to go off at anytime at which time we can have the home health care people come DC his line. OH God am I counting the minutes to the end of this going into his body. Everyone keeps promising that within a day or so his syptoms will start subsiding and he will start feeling better. I can only pray this is true as he is ready to give up.
He has been fighting this since April at home and since May when diagnoised in the hospital. With all the weight loss and now the inability to eat or drink,his mind and body are losing the desire to fight. Can anyone offer us some hope?

    Please just call the Onc office and explain the problems symptoms. They can suggest other medicene and it seems to me the dosage is too strong. My Onc had to lower my dosages twice so that my body would tolerate it.

    Good Luck. Day 3 was my worst day, (Thursday, the day to have the pump removed) usually by Sunday I felt okay.

    Please call the Onc.
    The Onc. will find a nausea med. that he can take that will help with symptoms. I had to get on my meds as soon as I get home from infusion...I take them around the clock, they have one that melts in your mouth that you won't have to drink anything to swallow. It is called Ondansetron 8 mg. they also give this to me in iv pre meds. before chemo. Thanks and good luck, Patti

    Yes. They have many many different types of medications that can help with the side effects, Kytril (sp?) is the one that worked for me. Also as mentioned by others, dosages of the chemo can be adjusted. I have seen on many posts that a lot of people had good luck with melons, to keep the nausea down, and that would help with hydration too. You must be proacitve with your oncologist, the squeaky wheel does get listened to. There is more they can do to help. I hope your husband gets some help with these awful symptoms and begins to tolerate his chemo better. Best wishes for him and you.

    So sorry he isn't feeling well.

    I'm new to this so I don't have much advice - I would say to call the oncologist too. My husband's docs/nurses told us to call them at the first sign of any side effects if the prescriptions they gave us didn't work, and that they had many meds to combat.

    Keep us updated and let us know how he and you are doing. You are both in my prayers and I'm sending all good thoughts your way.

    Oh my goodness how I hated
    Oh my goodness how I hated that 5FU! I had lost so much weight, and had the worse mouth sores ever! My onc switched me to Xeloda which is the pill form of 5FU and I've been able to tolerate it just fine! No more nausea at all. With the 5FU, I couldn't keep anything down! I'm sorry Sean is going through this ordeal. It does definitely get better after the pump is disconnected. When I was on that, it seemed like the minuted it was disconnected, I instantly started feeling better, and within a couple of days, I was back to my old self.

    Slow it down.........
    Have them slow down the infusions some...Others fare sometimes better with side effects if the infusion is fed slower. But for me it was 4-6 days sick with nausea , eating small portions of spicy foods on the 4th or 5th day, then by that Saturday or Sunday after Mon-Wed treatment I was back to almost normal routine, until it accumulated so much that the last 2 treatments were oxiliplatin free...only Leucovorin and 5fu..........
