Hernia

The tissue that separates
The tissue that separates various organs like the lungs from the abdomen, keeps the bowels in place, etc gets a tear in it that allows the organs to push through the tear to places where it shouldn't be. Lifting too much, or stressing that tissue can cause it to tear. My surgeon warned me to be careful, because after you've had radiation the tissue has been altered, gets a little "mushy", as he put it and there's a higher risk of it tearing. The stitches from the surgery also have a tendency to not hold.0 -
I have an umbilical hernia
I have an umbilical hernia which is a consequence of the LAR operation for my rectal cancer. It's unnoticeable (except on a scan) and doesn't bother me, so I was advised to just leave it alone, but that surgery to repair it would be a minor procedure, if I decided to get it fixed. I don't see how a hernia could be cancerous.0 -
How you get a Hernia?
Practice, practice, practice. Oh wait, that's "how do I get to Carnegie Hall?"...my mistake
You can get it from a strain on the muscles. If you've had surgery before in that area it's easier to get one I believe. I have one in my abdominal cavity from lifting something too heavy. It bulges on the one side. It's no big deal and when/if I get over the cancer crap then I will look into repair surgery. I don't think a hernia can be cancerous, it's a tear on the muscles. I've hadd 2 abdominal surgeries and while they were not fun, if that's all they are doing it may not be too bad of a operation.

I have had 2 , one on each side of my groin area called inguinal hernias, one at age 13 and one at age 18 and have had no trouble with either at all since surgery. Just a little sore after the surgeries since the muscle tissue is concerned the recovery is a little longer...0 -

Hey how did you get the hernias????
I was informed that it can be a heriditary trait of weak stomach muscle tissue and that the intestine simply pushed through the tissue and that is the bump you see when you strain. Sometimes, when not attended to the muscle tissue will heal itself and close up around the intestine causing what they call a "Stricter"...or a constriction of the intestine due to the pinching of it during muscle tissue mending.....0 -
One so far
I got a hernia right to the left of my belly button - at the top of my incision from my LAR surgery. My surgeon told me that area is weak from the surgery and sometimes they just happen. The surgery was outpatient to repair it - I went home the same day. I was REALLY sore - took a few days before I could stand up completely straight. Recovery was a bit slow - but I never seem to bounce back from abdominal surgeries quickly. Everyone said what a minor surgery it was, but to me, any time they cut into your abdomen, expect to be down for awhile. I didn't drive for a week or two and had neighbors help me get the kids to/from school. I was on pain meds less than a week though.0
