I live in north county
Hi Wendy,
I live in far northeast San Diego county, up in Fallbrook. I went to Pacific Oncology, but just changed a couple of weeks ago to the San Diego Cancer Center. They have two locations, both of which are north county- in Vista and in Encinitas. I'm very impressed so far. I also have some experience with Moores at UCSD. I had my liver resection there and have seen a couple of other specialists. I'll PM you w/ more info, if you'd like to know more details.

Hi Wendy! Welcome to the board! I'm in La Mesa and i go to the Moore's Cancer Center. I've been pretty happy there. I absolutely adore my oncologist, and most of my other doctors too. If you can see Dr. Fanta, i would highly recommend him. He has a way of lifting your spirits when you feel like crap. I haven't tried the new place Lisa is going to, but it sounds really great. I'm going to try and get some pain treatments there (acupuncture, massage). Where are you being treated now?
Many hugs,

it's my husband. we were just informed last week by an internal doctor at Sharp Gastroenterologist. The doctor is arranging us to see a surgeon within Sharp system and have a scan in a week or so. we are waiting to hear further from our Sharp doctor. we only see this Gastroenterologist once who seems nice and have no idea who will be the surgeon. Do you know about Sharp's capacity? Or you all think Moore's Cancer Cencer is the best in the area?
Thanks Lisa and Krista.0 -

WOW We have a SanDiego Survivors Group!!!!!!!! I am in Encinitas and go to Moores UCSD
Lisa is one who has been to the other centers and can compare better, I was at UCI and USC before UCSD Moores. My bias is to go to a NCI Cancer Center if you possibly can because these folks know research before it is published because they are DOING it!!!!
To all SanDiegoSurvivors: PM me w/ your email address if you want to "talk"; I don't know how to do that on this board but will do it privately if you want to.

A good surgeon
I don't know anything at all about Sharp's oncology department. I know from what i've heard that my surgeon, Dr. Rammamoorthy at Moore's is supposedly the top surgeon in the field of colorectal surgery. She is at the forefront with these new techniques, such as robotic surgery.
It is wonderful to see more San Diegans on the board! When i first came here there weren't any that still posted. We should all get together for coffee sometime!

getting together
Krista,
I would love to get us all together! We've talked about that before & I've talked about it with Serrana also. For me, summer is a tough time because my kids are off school- my nine yr old is very clingy to me & has a hard time when I go to the gym or leave her for Dr. appts, chemo, etc. So, I don't want to leave her more than I do already. You guys feel free to get together beforehand, but I'll have to wait to join you all in Sept when school's back in session. I think it will be nice to meet everyone from San Diego!
Take care everyone!

Party!
Hey everyone in SD! I don't mind waiting for you, Lisa! The months fly by so quickly anyway, September will be here before we know it! That will give us time to plan a nice get-together. Make it something special. Doesn't have to be fancy, maybe a dinner or something? That way we can talk about whatever we want in a neutral setting, and annoy the heck out of the other patrons who have no idea what the heck!

I'm for getting together!!!! Lets wait until Lisa gets back from her fabulous vacation and kids are in school .....or we could meet at a park so her daughter could play.....summer is short, gosh it is already the 4th of July.Does anyone work, have kids, etc? Lets share info in the meantime. PM me if you want to email. It is wonderful to know other semi colons nearby. Support is so essential to survival. Lets keep this thread going so it doesn't get buried; there may be others out there.

Children
I don't have any children. I thouht i still had plenty of time to figure that out, then the cancer diagnosis, and radiation sterilization. Oh well, wasn't meant to be! I did have an early miscarriage the year before diagnosis, so obviously, my body new it shouldn't happen. I was so sick for so long, and am still fighting treatment effects, i don't see how i could've taken care of that poor baby! I don't understand how you Mother's are doing it. Raising a family, AND fighting cancer! You amaze me!

we do what we've gotta do!
Krista,
The mothers comment- I guess we just do what we have to do! What would we do otherwise?!
I do feel badly many days when I'm not feeling that great because I feel like I'm ignoring my kids. I try to make it up on other days and in other ways. Sometimes I find myself complaining of aches and pains too much in front of my kids, then I try to change myself to appear more upbeat. I think I do pretty well most of the time of staying upbeat & I don't want to freak my kids out and have them worry about me too much. But, I guess they also need to understand why I can't always do everything they want me to. My youngest is always sad cause I won't go on the trampoline with her, of all things! I used to be able to do so much like that, believe it or not, before this! It's not actually the cancer that doesn't allow me to do things like that, but all my back problems and joint pains. I guess that's just part of getting older (of course the chemo certainly hasn't helped in that area). I imagine not many other moms my age would jump on a trampoline, though!
Well, I'm just checking in quickly today- I really need to go get lots done. We're going to Orange County for a 4th of July wedding tomorrow and then I need to get going on laundry, packing, a last minute run to Wal Mart for things we need to take on our trip, etc. We leave Wed. a.m.(where we'll go to another wedding plus the rest of our vacation).
You girls take care & we'll meet up together eventually!

Lisa you are amazing..........have a wonderful trip to OC and the festivities. Your vacation sounds fabulous and remember you don't have to be supermom during all this. I still think tht an acupunture series is the way to go on those joint aches...maybe when you get back.

UCSD
I am being treated at UCSD Moores Cancer Center for Stage III rectal. Had 28 days of neoadjuvant chemorad in April and a robotic LAR on June 8 with Dr. Ramamoorthy. (From what we have heard she is well respected in her field.) Still have 6 months of Folfox 6 under Dr. Fanta. Have been very happy with the care that I have been receiving - the doctors and staff have been superb! I especially liked the free coffee and pastries every weekday (except Friday) at the radiation center! lol0 -

Welcome to the San Diego "Chapter" of the Semicolons!!!! I see Dr Fanta also. Dr Ramamorthy has been recommended by my surgeon at UCI as really good. Hope your surgery went well and
your recovery is swift. Hope to meet you when we all get together when Lisa returns from her trip. I think it will be great to have a local group to support each other. I am in Encinitas. I finished 6 months of Folfiri/Avastin in March and have been thru two other rounds of chemo so if you have any questions etc let me know. It's not a piece of cake but sure was easier than I expected it to be. Serrana0 -

Dr. Fanta is my oncologist as well! Dr. Ramamoorthy did both my resection, and my takedown. She is one of the top colorectal surgeons in the country, and i feel lucky to have had her. I absolutely love Dr. Fanta. There are few doctors who actually 'care' about their patients like he does. Do you attend the monthly support group at the center? It meets every third Friday upstairs. I went to the last one, and it was very uplifting. I'm definitely going to be at the next one on the 17th. Does anyone else attend those meetings?
I'm very excited about meeting everyone. I agree, we do need a local support group. The really cool thing about that is we can come back here to discuss the things we talked about at the meeting. We can talk about that when Lisa gets back.
Maybe some of us will meet at the cancer center on the 17th? I will look for you!
