Does anybody have a suggestion how to get out of bed from laying down? I had a bilateral mast 6 days ago and it hurts so bad to get out of bed. I roll over to my side but when I try to use my chest or arm muscles to get up, the pain is unbearable. Any ideas for me? Thanks

    HI
yeap it is hard! I get close to the edge of the bed and swing my legs down as I grip the side of the bed with my hand. It still hurts to do but you gotta walk or get stiff... Have you got your drains out yet? be care full not to drop them when you move!

    Welcome joani
I had lumpectomy surgery, not mastectomy. So, sorry - can't specifically respond to your request.

But, do want to warmly welcome you to the group.

Hoping your pain subsides soon. And wishing you speedy recovery, without complications.

    Kind regards, Susan

I only had one removed but
I only had one removed but my husband gave me a hand up to help get out of bed. If you don't have someone to help, do you have a recliner? They are nice to sleep in when you can't get out of bed and when you are better you can switch back to the bed.

I did pretty much the same

I did pretty much the same as Kiley does. I found that turning on my side was impossible because of the pain, and in fact, slept on my back for six weeks after surgery, even though I normally sleep on my side. Just be very careful: I almost fell out of bed soon after my surgery. That taught me not to get too close...

    Thank you!
Thank you for posting this! I am having a sort of bilat mastectomy the end of August: Am having my reconstructed area removed due to recurrence and the other normal breast removed at the same time. I am also going to have skin grafts to cover the hole that will be left when they removed the cancerous reconstruction site: can't cover it the usual way for blah blah bla, I didn't listen to all the gross details. I never considered the problem of getting out of bed as I heal. YOu have made me think. I need to ask if the thigh think will keep me from using the suggestions to slip off the side of the bed feet first. I wonder if I should ask to have the good boob out first, give that time to heal, then go for the main surgery. I will ask that as I plan things out in July. If you hadn't posted this, I would have never thought of that! I owe you!

    Getting out of bed
Thanks for all the replys. I have been using my husbands lift recliner chair. I hardily recommend this chair for anybody having this surgery. I just push a button to lower the chair and another button to put me standing up. I don't know what I would have done without this chair! If you don't have one, and are going to have surgery, check into renting one!

Anyway, I am getting tired of being in the chair and am looking forward to laying down in my bed. I did it once and it hurt so bad getting up in the morning I have been afraid to get back into bed. I am going to try it again tonight using your suggestions. I see my surgeon on Thursday and I hope to get my 3 drains removed then. Thanks for letting me join you all!

I had a lumpectomy ... but about 6 years ago I had a breast reduction (I was HUGE!)and I had been told that the best thing was to sleep in a recliner. It really helped those first few days when I couldn't really "push" myself up and out of bed. I've also heard of people just getting a lounge kind of lawn chair to sleep on. Afater I finally graduated to being able to sleep in my bed ... I still used a lot of pillows. I say ... whatever works ... go for it.

And ... just a note on my breast reduction ... I am so glad I did that because I had a lot of fibroid crap ... and I it would have made it very difficult to find my cancer if I still had those big boobs.

    Just an idea
what about buying one of those side rails you can get in the baby dept at Wal-Mart. You can put it up when you lay down and it will give you something to hold on to when you get up. As an adult you could probably figure out how to operate it vs. a little kid... lol..The one I bought for my kids folded down beside the bottom of the bed when not in use and I don't remember it costing very much... just an idea.
