Eyelashes
Oh, Jeanne. Sorry for your frustrations.
Here's my thought... The eyelashes that managed to remain may not actually be "live" - maybe just kinda stuck there, without real roots. So, now that all of your hair follicles have "kicked back in" - new growth might be pushing out the old. Therefore, unfortunately, it may have to get a little bit worse before it gets better.
My suggestion, use eyeliner (pencil, not liquid) and "smudge" it. Your eyes won't look "bald" - especially from a bit of a distance.
Kind regards, Susan0 -
Jeanne
I don't know about the eyelashes ... but I DO know that there are "delayed" side-effects. I had the last of my 12-week taxol/herceptin infusions the end of May ... and thought that once that was finished the side-effects effects would go away ... but instead ... I've developed two more! The first thing happened about a week after my last infusion and that was a swollen ankle. No Pain! The oncologist sent me for a vascular ultra-sound to be sure it wasn't a blood clot ... and it wasn't. Then I went to the orthopedist to have the ankle xrayed ... because it's the ankle I broke a couple of years ago and it has a plate and 7 screws in it. But ... the xray came back just fine ... all of the hardware is secure etc. The oncologist has determined that it is "probably" a delayed reaction to the chemo ... and the only reason it is just in that one ankle is that it is a "weaker" part ... otherwise both ankles would probably be swollen. Anyway ... he has me taking 2 ibuprofen a day ... and in the beginning ... the ankle got bigger and even the calf of my leg ... but just this morning I've noticed that I think it is finally getting better and some of the swelling seems to be going away.
Anyway ... that's one "delayed" side effects. The other is something I just noticed a couple of days ago. I would have been concerned ... except that I've read about others on this discussion board experiencing it ... and ... that is discoloration of my fingernails. Kind of looks like I've hit a few fingers with a hammer and have bruises under the nail. Very attractive!
So ... I do know there are "delayed" side effects ... so I would imagine that's what you are going through with your eyelashes. Who knows ... when they finally do come back they may be so long you'll have to trim them so you can see out. :-)
hugs.

Teena, I am glad to hear that your swollen ankle mystery was resolved and that it was not serious. Scary, though, I know.
I also am losing my eyelashes and eyebrows. More than a month out of chemo, I thought I had made it and my brows would stay. Wrong. Will be heading out to get pencils later. (Thanks, Susan, for the tip.)0 -

Hey Moopy,
If you are going to head out for eyebrow pencils, I'd like to give you a suggestion. From your photo it looks like you have a fair complexion like me. I tried the taupe eyebrow powder and the pencil and ended up looking like Joan Crawford. It just looked really fake and scary. After much expense and trial and error, I found the L'Oriel (sp?) pencil set for blondes and it looks much more natural. Love surf0 -

I understand your frustration about the eyebrows and lashes. I was so excited that I did not loose them when I did A/C treatments and then I lost most of them with Taxol. Now I look ridiculous. At least I can cover my head with a great scarve but the few lashes and few brow hairs do not look great and I can't wait to get them back. I finished Taxol 2 weeks ago...waiting...waiting...0 -

I can relate to the fingernail thing. In fact, I had a couple of them fall off.

Oh GREAT !!! Fingernails falling off. YUK!!!
I was thinking if I just put enough nail polish on them no one would notice ... but if they start falling off ... that might be another story ... when I start wearing gloves to work.

Nails, Hair, Eyebrows, Eyelashes and Finger tips
I lost all of the above during and right after chemo. But, I'm happy to say, they all have grown back - it's now been 14 months since I finished chemo. My eyebrows, which once were quite thick and dark, are back but on the sparse side and bit lighter than I remember them, but they are back. The worst was my finger tips, which calloused up, then peeled, leaving me feeling like I would never, never, have any finger prints again. But, my finger tips are now as good as ever. Time. That's what it takes. Hang in there. Hugs, Marilynn0 -

Yep, everything of mine came back also. But my eyebrows did the same thing that yours did. They came back lighter and sparcer. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, I guess.

As a 3 and 1/2 yr survivor, I still have MIA eyelashes. I lost most of my eyebrows, but they came back and, of course, all of my hair. Finally, I am getting hair elsewhere but I could have lived a lifetime without the return of hair on my legs. It's been nice not shaving for the past 3+ years! I think some hair takes longer to come back, who knows?
I was thinking of trying to apply some eye-liner (borrow my daughter's liquid black liner), but I thought I would wait until summer when I don't have to be at work (just in case I make a total mess of myself). Susan, you suggested pencil and not liquid, why?
Jeanne, what I have done is applied more eyelash make-up and some darker shadow to hide the fact that I don't have all of my lashes. I plan to experiment with liner, I just hope I don't look like I just had a fight with the wall and lost. I'm not too skilled in the make-up department.

I am a manic eyelash person as well..I was actually remembering High School when Maybelline mascara came in small, red rectangular cases with DRY mascara and a brush which looked like a mini toothbrush. You had to make mascara paste with water...you don't want to know how many times we girls used spit....well hey! Carrying water bottes was non existant in the 60s'!
But I digress....I bought a wardrobe of false eyelashes at the local drugstore during chemo, and I trimmed them, or cut them, some were full, some were longish, and wore them all the time!!! They made me feel feminine, and no, I never did get an eye infection!
My lashes came back I would say 90%...some days it seems they are as long and lush as they used to be, other days not.
But they did come back, and yours will too!!!
Hugs,

Dang it, I did not read your post before I went off to get a pencil today! I will visit the local drugstore and see if I can find the Loreal pencil set. If I do, I will take back the expensive one. I haven't opened it yet. Thank you for this info; a more natural look for less sounds perfect. I definitely need to be a smarter shopper now.
Hope you are feeling more upbeat than you were earlier. It is hard sometimes, isn't it?
Thanks again, Moopy0 -

Did wearing the false eyelashes, when you took them off, pull out what was left, or any new lashes? That's what i've wondered and was concerned about...apart from the fact that i can't get them on very well LOL0 -

No, they didn't pull out what wasn't there! :-) And, aside from that, they are glued ABOVE the lash line, where you would put the eyeliner. Which is what I did~ I would attach the lashes, and then use liquid liner to fill in. All good! Especially if you only go out to dimly, preferably pink hued places at night! LOL
