A "colonoscopy virgin"

Dear Online Family,

Mary from WI here hoping each and every one of you are safe, happy and well today and always!

Also, I wanted to update everyone on my 1st colonoscopy that I had today - thus I am/was a colonoscopy virgin... ha! ha!

Everything looked normal with one small hemorroid (sp?) that isn't anything to worry about. And I don't have to go back for another 5 years now so...

Thank you all again for your kind words and support for this "big scared chicken" here. I hope my mom is looking down and is proud since not only am I trying to be pro-active about my own health; but trying to do this for her as well so...

    So glad everything went well, and you bet your mom is looking down at you all proud! I'm even proud you went, and hopefully things will be just as clear in 5 years! it was still nice too meet you, and hope to still talk to you soon :)

    Colonoscopy
    Don't be too hard on yourself, I have had 4 colonoscopies now, and with each one I still get anxious, and scared. For one the twilight meds they give have no affect on me, so I am wide awake through the entire process, and feel everything they do. My Dr has gotten so use to me being wide awake, that he talks to me through the entire procedure and asks me to tell him when it hurts now.

    You bet your Mom is looking down and is proud of you, I don't know your full story, but believe me I am proud of you too, as to go through something that scares us half to death in itself, is a huge step in the fight!

    Boy, I really appreciate you taking the time to write that great note to me... thank you again for that.

    And, long story short, my mom was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer when she was only 59 years old. Her husband was hospitalized at a time when she was having severe cramping (worse than labor pains - she told me) and was too scared to go to the doctor. She never even got her colonoscopy at 50 like everyone should; we have no history of colon cancer in our family (until now - of course).

    One day at work, her coloring was "gray" and was rushed to the hospital; where they told her after many, many scans she had cancer. They tried to scope her but couldn't due to the tumor in her colon.

    It was already in her lungs and liver; and eventually went to her brain when she passed away at home in her sleep on 9/17/07.

    So, I not only did this for me; but for my mom in realizing that I need to be around a lot longer for my adorable 15 month-old little boy.

    Okay, I am officially off of my soap box; thanks for listening!

    I always have a shoulder
    Your mom's story sounds so much like my mom's, but her cancer started with skin cancer. She had several spots removed, but as she got older, she refused to even go in anymore to have suspicous spots looked at. Even though I was pretty much her care giver, I could only push her so far where Drs were concerned. Finally after being miserable for a long time with shoulder pain she decided enough was enough and had me take her to ER only to find out her cancer had spread through out her entire body and bones.

    When I knew something wasn't right after getting that horrible flu, I demanded a second oppinion. I have told my brothers over and over again from the beginning of my fight that I was not going to be the silent one in the family and I hope that if they ever feel something isn't right that they get off their butts and take a stand for those who were too afraid to do so.

    Hello all, thought i would
    Hello all, thought i would add to this, my mother had colon cancer in 2005 and after surgery and 6 months of chemo she is in full recession. i am 36 years old but my doctor wants me to be checked out since it is in my family history. My grandmother had colon cancer as well but it had spread to her lungs. they caught it at stage 5 and it was too late. I currently have liposarcom of the neck which was removed 2 weeks ago. i will have to go through 6 weeks of x-ray therapy. after that i was thinking i should go for a colonoscopy just in case. but through all this i have kept positive with a lot of family support and with 4 children i don't have room for negativity. i just love to read good news and joined this posting since my mother is a survivor. thank you

    With your history I would definitely push for a colonoscopy. As I preach to all my family and friends "It's one day gone to gain the REST of your life!"
