You usually need a drain for a mastectomy, I had a lumpectomy, but since they took so much more tissue than expected, I stayed overnight because they put in a drain. I guess it all depends on the surgeon and the surgery. Good luck!

I didn't have a drain Pammy, but, I had a lumpectomy too, and, what the plastic surgeon took was small. Also, I didn't have any nodes removed, so, that probably makes the difference. Go to bed hon..you need sleep! Love, Jeanne0 -

I had mastectomy and came home with two drains.
Not sure if all lumpectomies require a drain or not though.
Wish I could be of more help.

To drain or not to drain.....
...that is the question. Yes, I am still up at 2:00am!! But we will have to read the book to find out if the Handsome Surgeon put a drain into the woeful patient....did he do it just to see her again? Did he want to do it but couldn't bring himself to corrupt her? Stay tuned for the real story.........:) Pammy0 -

Had 2 drains in for 2 weeks. After removal the fluid continued to build up and the Dr had to asperate several times. He eventually had to put another drain in and it stayed in about 3 weeks until the daily amount was very very little.
SOOOOOOOO don't be in a hurry to have it removed.

I had two drains for two weeks from a dble. mast.
It's annoying, but not really a big deal....really. It's amazing what you can get used to.
Not to worry,

It's a week today, saw doc yesterday, drain stays, its still pumping. She said maybe another few days before we can remove it. Fluid has to be less than 30 cc for 24 hrs.0 -
Drains
Yes, I too had a drain after lumpectomy. I think it stayed in for about a week. My surgery was close to Thanksgiving so I just took the time off from work. If you need to work I think you can get a camisol with pockets for the drains so you're more comfortable. Good luck today!

Thanks for sharing that Kat... I was wondering why I needed to measure it when I emptied it... Now I know.. okay.. going for under 30 cc's per day! hummmm.. at this point not even close.
