Question about liver

I am a Stage 3 colon cancer survivor (2 years now) and still NED! But, I just came from the oncologist with my Daughter in Law and she has Stage 4 cancer in the liver: GIST tumor. (we think the origin was in the stomach)

Just made me sick to hear that. 29 years old and 3 small kids.
Anyway, I know that a few of you have had Mets to the liver


Does anyone know of a good Liver Specialist in the area of Chicago or Indianapolis, Lafayette, Ind?
We did not like her first Oncologist and he admitted he was not a liver specialist.

I know this is a short analysis so hope it makes sense.

    Oh Claudia, I am so sorry. This is hard news. I do not know of any liver specialists, but I'm sure someone on this board will have some good recommendations. I am keeping all of you in my prayers.

    I am not sure what is in the Chicago or IN area, but below are some of the well known cancer facilities:

    Sloan-Kettering
    MD Anderson
    Mayo Clinic
    John Hopkins
    Cancer Centers of American

    You could also do a google search within that area or even call the American Cancer Society or the National Cancer Institute to see what is available.

    Vanderbilt Medical Center
    My husband saw a great liver oncologist at Vanderbilt in Nashville Tn
    His name is DR Alexander Parikh. He removed 75% of my husbands right lobe of his liver. He said it was the largest liver met that he had seen. My husband original cancer was colorectal with mets to liver and to lung. Great success at Vanderbilt..well pleased with doctors and hospital. If you need the number or any other info. let me know.

    I am....
    ....Stage 4 Colon Cancer with a tumor in my liver, I don't even know what the plans are that my onc has for the liver yet, she said the chemo has killed most of my cancer, and when I asked about liver resecting, she said we would cross that bridge when we get there, right now she's focused on the colon and chemo shrinking the tumors, I would actually like to know who the best liver surgeons are as well, so will be reading this to see if anyone is recommeneded.

    I had rectal cancer with mets to the liver. My surgeon refered me to Dr. Steven Curley at MD Anderson in Houston. I love him!! He resected 2/3 of my liver because I had 2 spots in 'hard to reach' areas. The reason why I was so pleased is because he never made me feel like it was a death sentence. He is well known in his field and specializes in liver mets. And he is very personable.
    You can also google him and see him on 60 Minutes with a new way to kill cancer cells that he is trying to get approved with the FDA.

    I'm sorry about your DIL. That sucks! I apologize for not being on the boards much and being so late in responding. I was at the Liver Symposium in Chicago last month. They brought in oncologists from all over the world to talk about the latest and greatest in liver tumor treatment.

    At Robert H Lurie Comprehensive canzer Center of Northwestern University there were many doctors that impressed me, but they are radiation and intervental oncologists, not medical oncologists. I can't, unfortunately, recommend a medical oncologist there. I can call Suzanne Lindley (the organizer and national advocate) for a personal recommendation or I can forward you her email. Let me know what I can do.
