Living a Long Life
How to live a long life is a link to a wonderful article about author/physician, Shigeaki Hinohara who is 97 years old and still working. I think we all could learn something from his outlook on life. Now, all the more reason I MUST MUST MUST lose weight

You are soooo right!! Any weight gain on your part, I would put 100% down to stress and now is not the time for you to be thinking, "Gee, I think I'll juggle a diet or a complete change in my way of eating". You just continue doing what you are doing and spending every free minute loving Angel and the weight loss can be thought of later
Phil, unless that is a super old picture of you, you don't look like you need to lose a pound... you look like you are at the ideal weight for your height!
Hahaha Michelle... it's all to do with camera angles . As anyone who has weight issues can attest to, we HATE getting our picture taken and if we do, we have to have hundreds taken before we will agree to one LOL! My current avatar, although of poorer quality (taken with the built-in computer camera), it is at a good angle so it actually looks like I have a thinner face and neck... so I scooped it up. I have a better one as far as quality goes, with me holding my adorable grand-niece (ok, I guess she is really a great-niece, but my sister LOVES being a grandma, so I keep telling everyone that little Kennedy is my grand-niece ) and you can definitely see that my face is not as thin as I'd like everyone to believe! LOL!!
Ok, I'll put it up, just because Kennedy is so darn adorable I know it takes about 24 hours for it to change to the new one, but stay tuned tomorrow
When it comes down to it... I KNOW being overweight is not healthy whether you have cancer or not and no one who is overweight has ever lived a long, healthy life... but when I hear stories about others and how they can't keep food down during treatment and oncologists don't want ANYONE to lose weight while on chemo... I'm thinking that maybe my excess weight actually helped me get through the worst of chemo Not sure if I'm just justifying being overweight or not, but I definitely didn't have the loss of weight issues and vomiting/weakness that others have had to suffer through.
Oh, I'll jump at anything to justify the excess poundage!! LOL!!

Hot Diggety-Dog!! That Command/Shift/R worked like a hot darn! Now, will I remember it? I'm going to put a post-it note on my monitor... and hope I don't lose the post-it! I have given up relying on my memory! LOL!

I've found the secret. I'm on the chemo diet and have a viral mess crud that won't let up. I've lost 17 lbs in 3 wks. I now weigh less than I did in high school, go figure.

Thanks, Mike! My little Kennedy looks like a miniature adult... yet, she's only 7 months old in that shot. She is going to be a heart-breaker when she gets older... and something tells me she is going to be one mischievious little girl (which I will be egging her on, much to her mother's dismay)!!

Gail... if I could only walk all over town like I used to, I know that would help big time with getting rid of the weight I have gained through the chemo, etc. That's part of my problem... not being able to walk like I used to.
The only "diet" that has ever worked for me has been the low carb/high protein. All the other diets (counting calories, counting points, weighing portions, etc) have not worked for me... I swear I'm one of the few people who have gained on them. Grrrrr! Different strokes for different folks/different metabolisms.
I am just going to have to buckle down and get back on the low carb diet that worked for me... as well, once the warmer weather gets here then that always helps too

It sits next to my at my desk so I can add new people/concerns as they come up while I'm roaming the internet. I even have code snippets written in the margins so I can remember how to insert different stuff on different forums I go to since they can be so different (some attempt to pre-process some of your code so you have to truncate the html code).

love your pic cheryl. I seem to be a weirdo that puts weight on with chemo...anybody else ever do that ? so far I have put on about 12 pounds on the oxy/xeloda diet. I think because I feel nauseous so much of the time I just eat thinking maybe I'll feel better. Actually it works...I do feel less sick if my tum is jammed and of course because i hold the chemo card I think I should be be aboe to have the occasional treat like potato chips or or or:)
I need new pants....off to the thrift store I guess

gained weight on chemo too
Hi Cheryl,
I just wanted to say, first of all, it's good to see you back here again & your picture with the baby is darling. My profile picture may not show it (I need to either delete or update my picture- I've said that before & still haven't done it)- but I have definitely gained weight & am at my heaviest ever (other than pregnancy weights). It doesn't show up as much in my face as it does everywhere else, but my face is fuller than my profile pic shows. I finally broke down and had to go buy a few new clothes at my "new" size. That's always a bummer, but I was down to just two pants that still fit- my others were all squeezing me to death!
I'm hoping the hand/foot syndrome will let up some in my feet & I'll feel less fatigued so I can exercise more. It's hard to walk much when going anything more than just around the block once gives me blisters on the soles of my feet. I get a bit of a break from the chemo now, so I'm planning on hitting the exercise routine (when I get over this horrible cold I have at the moment which, by the way, is just the first "regular" sickness I've had since my diagnosis in 8/07- kind of amazing). In my break from chemo (even if it's short), I'm starting today with the antioxidants and wheat grass juice to build my system up again and hopefully help me get my energy back.
An interesting sidenote, somewhat related- I saw an article yesterday that some professor is contesting past studies that had shown vitamin C was a hinderance to chemo working. He claims that the study involved giving lab mice a form of vitamin C that was not abscorbic acid, which is the form that people actually take. He claims that abscorbic acid vit C won't have the same negative effect on chemo's effectiveness. Nothing solid there yet- so I wouldn't assume he's right yet, without proof. It sure would be a shame to take chemo and then take something at the same time that would hinder its effectiveness. Anyhow, today's the day I'm going to start adding all the supplements high in antioxidants into my diet. I don't know how long my chemo break will be (still waiting for PET results to see about my "what's next" is), but I'm going to give myself some boosters in the meantime. I long for energy again!
Take care everyone,
Lisa0 -

... since I'm sure you realize there is no prayer journal on my desk , in my purse or anywhere else I may be Also, I would be in one heck of a mess if I had one book where I kept everything from my grocery lists to my html coding to the idiocyncracies between computer platforms
For the most part, when it comes to online stuff, the "majority" of websites tend to operate the same way with basic HTML coding... there are only those few where you have to use proprietary software applications. Now, software/hardware idiocyncracies between the different computer platforms/Operating Systems... that's a whole other issue and one that, in all fairness, I haven't had to worry about too often... at least, not for the kinds of things I do online. If anything, usually my online work activities is behind the scenes, maintaining an existing website where I am either using open source code or if I'm really stumped, can fall back on the old school of manually applying HTML code. I don't think I've actually ever come across another website where I have had to use a Hard Refresh in Firefox.... a simple browser refresh or clearing of the cache has always worked in the past. CSN is the only site that I have had to use a Hard Refresh... and the only time at that is to refresh when changing the avatar picture. Other sites that I use an avatar picture, it changes without having to do a refresh of any sort... so obviously, your mileage may vary
But for the occasional blip like this, a post-it note works just fine... I now have two such post-it notes on my monitor... everything else falls in the scope of basic HTML or an understanding of the software app I'm using to update various webpages I do maintenance on
But it is interesting to hear how others, who also are in the biz of web maintenance do their personal reminders

Mags,
In my first bout with chemo last winter, I gained 8 pounds - irritating! It was a combo of fluids (I kept getting dehydrated and the would pump me up often) and eating to combat the nausea I think. I lost it after surgery. I am now down 20 pounds, and wouldn't mind at least 20 more!
BTW my doc was happy I gained weight. Go figure...LOL

Mags... I'm another weight-gaining-weirdo when it comes to chemo!! Seriously, I was one of those who just assumed that anyone who 1) has cancer and 2) has to have chemo, they are going to lose weight and it's one of those "fast" weight losses. I remember, prior to starting my chemo and being more than a little anxious about it (aren't we all when doing it for the first time?), I told my GP, "Oh well, let's look at the bright side. I have tried every diet known to mankind since I was a child and I KNOW over the years you have had your doubts that I wasn't following the plans correctly because I never lost more than a handful of pounds. NOW, for the first time in my life I'm going to lose all that weight I've tried so hard to lose all my life... so there is a silver lining to all of this." In hindsight, I realize that is not necessarily a good way to look at weigh-loss caused by chemo, but for me, it did seem like a viable solution.
Well, you can imagine how ripped off I felt when, not only did I not LOSE any weight... I GAINED weight!!! I asked my GP who I could sue for this "Guaranteed to lose" weight loss program and I didn't lose any? He tried so hard to keep a straight face but he ended up cracking up. He said, "Only you could find the humour in putting yourself on this extreme diet program and still not getting the results you wanted." I told him it was not funny... if I couldn't lose on the Chemo Diet, how the heck could he ever expect me to lose on a normal weight loss diet?? So he promised never to make losing a weight an issue with me again
Now, besides my resistence to losing while on chemo, I'm now considered "middle age", I've had a full hysterectomy (aka no estrogen production/menopause) AND I've had one of two adrenal glands surgically removed (aka as interferrence with the hormone producing machine)... so not only do I have a challenge to LOSE weight, I now have the ongoing battle of trying to stop the gaining of weight! Arrrrrgh!
I'm off to see my oncologist today... I think I will whine to her
Huggggggs,
