Sorry about the mouth sores, Julie
What kind of chemo are you on...5/FU and...????
Are you on a continuous IV with a pump for several days, if so how many days?
Things that might help for next time is to have your chemo nurse slow the rate of the 5/FU. If they are giving you the 5/FU as an IV push...tell them to stop and give it to you more slowly. If you are NOT on Oxaliplatin sucking on ice chips can help too.
Talk to your onc about the Magic Mouthwash not working...perhaps he can prescribe something different.
I'm hoping others can help with this too.0 -
Zilactin - B works well
I've been prone to canker sores since childhood and recently found Zilactin-B. You can buy it at Wal-Mart for about $6.50 a tube right by the Orajel. It's a brown liquid that you put over the sore spot. It dries and will last for most of the day, allowing the sore to heal from the inside out, protecting it from bacteria and keeping foods out. There's no pain while it's covered. Neat stuff. Tastes icky and smells back but it sure works!
Our black lab had a hot spot that he wouldn't stop licking. I dried the spot (dry your mouth before applying) and smeared some over his spot. He never licked it again and the med remained on his leg for over a week. Hair grew right through it and he was all fixed up. Good stuff, like I said!0 -
mouth sores
I have fought mouth sores awhile and here is the best remedies I've found. I try everything suggested here, too. I brush my teeth several times a day with a toddler toothbrush (much softer and more gentle) and brush my tongue and cheeks. I use Biotene toothpaste but before I found that I used a child's toothpaste which worked well too. I keep a travels cup with a mixture of salt/baking soda water on the kitchen counter and my bathroom counter and swish it around in my mouth every time I walk by. It keeps bacteria down and prohibits growth of the ick stuff. (very technical term, sorry) I suck on popsickles and ice chips to numb my mouth before eating.
That being said, prevention works best. The salt/baking soda rinse I use several times a day to prevent the mouth sores too, but the best seems to be sucking on ice chips during infusion. If you are on Oxiliplatin this is NOT an option. With other drugs it's quite effective.
