Toothpaste??
I know this seems trivial, but my mouth hurts so badly and I'm afraid that after all my chemo and surgery, my teeth are going to fall out of my head!
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hugs and prayers,
Elizabeth

colgate sensitive?
I have tried several toothpastes made for sensitive teeth/gums (eg colgate -- there are others). These can help. But are you using a special mouthwash? Don't use normal mouthwash because the alcohol can be awful. Have your doctor/nurses suggested any special mouthwash? If not, do ask.

Mouth Soreness
If your mouth is sore due to mouth sores than I would recommend Magic Mouthwash, which help alleviate my sore mouth, but if the soreness is coming from brushing your teeth, make sure you are using a very soft or soft brissel brush and one of toothpastes recommended from the other comments.0 -
soft bristles
Also, if you run the toothbrush under hot water briefly before putting on the toothpaste, it softens the bristles and helps TREMENDOUSLY! I didn't find I needed a different toothpaste, but there are lots to choose from! Definitely look out for alcohol and a strong mint!

Not sure what your specific problem is.....if it is the toothpaste, I had
a similar problem while on chemo.....the flavored toothpaste with mint, etc.
burned my mouth terribly so I would support the previous suggestions of Tom's
and others....as far as mouthwash
goes there is an over the counter one called Prevention Oncology Mouth Rise;it helped
a lot; I also went to a softer toothbrush and to warm water instead of cold for
brushing.

I had the worst mouths sores ever, during each chemo. The week in between chemo they would start to feel alittle better but by then it was back to chemo. Not only couldn't I brush my teeth from the sores but when I felt like eating I couldn't even do that. My onc gave me magic mouthwash which really helped because it numbs everything. I also could only use a natural tooth paste (Tom's)which I really didn't like,I never felt like my teeth or breath were clean. Lasly I used a soft toothbrush or a childs. Towards the end of chemo it got much better. I haven't had a chance to get to the dentist yet because of all the other dr visits I go to but that's a whole different story, but I really feel like I need to go.I just have to find the time! Talk to your onc,I'm sure they will help. Feel Good!0 -

My onc recommended biotene. It was gentle and recommended for dry mouth.0 -
Radiation
Two of my uncles just completed radiation in the last 6 months and both were warned about loose teeth, sore gums, increased decay, etc. My chemo info said to use a soft toothbrush and not to floss.
Hope you can find something to help. My mother had a sinus lift and was given a mouthwash to use during her time of healing but it was $70.00 a BOTTLE! With insurance!
Have a WONDERFUL and happy day!

toothpaste
There's always good old baking soda.
It's yummy too :-(
Try this link, you may find something in there.
I'm sure you know not to believe EVERYTHING you read on the Internet (except if I post it)

Mouth Rinse to prevent
I can't seem to find my original instructions from my chemo nurse, but this sounds familiar. My chemo nurse told me to rinse my mouth every time I went to the bathroom (to ensure it get's done several times a day) with a hydrogen peroxide water mix. I found this on the net and it sounds a little familiar. This is supposed to prevent the mouth sores from starting, and I never did get a mouth sore the entire time I was on chemo. Now, maybe I was just lucky, or maybe this solution really did work for me.
Rinse your mouth several times a day with a solution of 1/4 teaspoon
baking soda and 1/8 teaspoon salt in one cup of warm water. You may
also use a mixture of 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with 1/2 cup of
water. Then, rinse with plain water.
Here is the link that I used to read about the mix:
http://www.california-impact.org/documents/MouthSores.pdf
I have also heard that once the mouth sores are present, the "magic mouthwash" is helpful. I think there are some great suggestions above as well.
I hope you find some relief, mouth pain is destructive in so many ways to your healing.0 -
WOW! So many great ideas!!!!!
I used Colgate Total, but it was my regular toothpaste. I switched to a soft toothbrush, and brushed with lukewarm water....found a bottle of alcohol-free mouthwash for after brushing...And I had some fairly narly sores in my mouth.

Tooth soap
Hi LizBiz,
I use a natural toothpowder by Eco-Dent. One is ExtraBrite and the other is DailyCare. It's a baking soda based powder. there are no dyes or sweeteners and is 100% natural using flavoring oils and extracts. there is no fluoride (a toxic chemical) or glycerine (coats the teeth).

My mouth bothers me also, and not because of mouth sores. I have been using regular toothpaste but it makes me crazy and burns. my friend has the colgate sensitive and i used it yesterday - it was great and didn;t burn at all. gonna go get me some of that stuff!0
