I had been working out with a personal trainer and actually getting quite buff.....lifting weights, doing treadmill, bike and walking in the hills with my dog. I was active at work also since my job requires lots of walking and lifting,, always on my feet. I was eating nutritionally and doing everything possible for a healthy lifestyle.
After i was diagnosed everyone told me i better "beef up" because i didn't want to lose to much. Plus i remembered my mom who died of lung cancer over 20 years ago and how frail she had become. Man have times changed now they tell me you will probably gain 20-30pounds. I have already gained 20 and how can that happen in a few short months? Is it the steroids or what? anyway what a lesson in humility..Hope i can take it off either now or when i'm done? anyone have insights into this?
God Bless
Jackie

I gained 20 pounds too. The onc didn't want me to try and lose it until after treatment. Little did he know how hard it is for me to lose weight. Once my body gets it, it doesn't want to let it go. Anyway I'm five years since dignosis and I still have about 7 or 8 still with me. I think it bonded with my other extra pounds and wants to stay. If I tried I'm sure I could get rid of it but it's not my first priority now. You should talk to your doctor and if you have to wait till after treatment, than wait. Just take care of yourself.

    Weight Gain
Jackie, I like you gained 30 lbs since diagnosed even though I watch what I eat and work out 5 days a week. I'm at my wits end since I don't like the way I look and was never this heavy aside from being pregnant. I've been on tamoxifen for 1 year now and can't loose the weight at all. I'm hoping once this is all over, I'll be able to lose it again. Hugs, Lili

    No weight gain/loss for me
No weight gain/loss for me even though I ate what I could and didn't exercise during treatment. We all react differently to chemo meds so be cautious now and worry about the weight gain after treatment. If you're not feeling well then you may not have a choice about what you can or can't eat. Life after breast cancer for me includes eating healthier (I was a fast food junkie) and exercising (I'd rather take a nap) to make me feel better and to avoid the weight gain. Good luck.

I too have gained over twenty pounds. I went from a size six to a size 10. None of my clothes fits. I'm not eating much of anything, and I'm still gaining weight. I ask my doctor aboutit, when I first noticed the weight gain in July 2008. She told me that was good because I was to small and the chemo would only make me lose more weight. I did not need to have the chemo. I think the Arimidex is making me gain weight. I see my GYN on the 10th. I going to tell her, maybe she can help me.

    question
Is weight gain a side effect for tamoxifin AND aromatase inhibitors?

    Weight Gain and Dry Eyes
Yes, it is listed as one of the side effects. Most women I know that are on it have gained weight or have not been able to lose weight they gained during chemo. The steroids they give you for the nausea during chemo is what makes your gain weight. Another side effect to watch out for is dry eyes. This is caused not so much by the tamoxifen, but by the blocking of the estrogen. Hugs, Lili

    Dry eyes and....
dry mouth. I am always thirsty! (I'm on Arimidex). I chew gum and that seems to help. Being a teacher, gum chewing is a no-no, so I have to be very surreptitious (real word?). about it. :) Lynn

    I've never had a problem
I've never had a problem with my weight and then I did chemo. Ate lots of junk and with absolutely no exercise I maintained about 130lbs.......then came the tamoxifen and boom, up 15 lbs. Even though I was eating much better and far more active I still kept gaining. I went off the tamoxifen and went on an AI and gained another 5lbs. 20Lbs...it's almost laughable. When I hit 152, I thought I wonder if I'll go to 160. Anyway I've been using www.nutritiondata.com to try and lose this flab. I figured out my BMI (on site) and it gives me the number of calories to maintain. I log all my food in every day and am trying to hit a couple of hundred less then I need while watching the nutrients which it gives as well. I think it's working, slowly though.

On another note, I have osteo so the extra weight is good for that.
