    Hi Nancy: When they put the port in they knock you out so you will probably have the procedure done is a same day surgery unit. You will be a little sore for about 1 week until you heal. They usually do it about 1 week before you start chemo. The EMLA cream is a topical ointment that numbs the area. I didn't get anything and it wasn't such a big deal. It's almost like when you have your blood drawn, the initial prick, then you won't feel anything. Hugs, Lili

    I'll make sure to ask for the Emla cream. I don't look forward to getting the port but after everything else i think this should be a piece of cake. I hope my are improves soon. It is still so sore. It's been 12 dayssince the last surgery. I had the lumpectomy and sentinal node on Dec. 18 so it hasen't been that long but the Dr's keep tellingme it could get worse if the shoulder stiffens up too much. They gave me some excersises to do. Crallingmyfingers up the wall and bending over and making circles in the air with my arm. Love, Nancy

    Soreness
    I've heard those exercises help, Nancy. Good that they are telling you what to do to minimize future stiffness. As for the port insertion, mine took about 35 minutes or so and was under light anesthesia, so I was hardly even nauseated when I woke up (and I tend to get nauseated all the time, for no reason). The soreness was not too bad. My oncologist nurse said, however, that the doctor put the port in a little too low, so the needle has to go through too much breast tissue. She said that it was probably done that way so that I could wear low-cut tops without the scar showing. Well, it's January and I'm not exactly out wearing low-cut tops these days, but anyway, it's not really a big deal. Good luck!

    I have had two mugas and both went smoothly. I am glad you found us and as you can see by everyones posts this is a very supportive group! I am truly sorry for your loss and wish you well on your fight with cancer. There are many who come out triumphant so please have hope and come in here often with any questions or just to rant, we are here for you!

    Exercise and Port
    Make sure you do those exercises! They hurt to be sure, and you may not want to do them, but you sure don't need to atrophy and get limited use of the arm! My sweetie helped me to stretch, and I thank him now soooo much for having done that with me. A necessary evil to be sure!

    I did get the numbing spray each time, but like Lili said, it didn't hurt to get "plugged in" for chemo, and it also made my labs easier.

    Nancy, make sure you do the exercises. I didn't do it exactly as I should and wound up with a frozen shoulder and 60 physical therapy visits and it is still sore. I am now exercising at the gym with very light weights to keep it mobile. It will be uncomfortable but the consequences are a lot worse. Hugs, Lili

    Muga Scan
    Hi Everyone,
    I just wanted to let you know I had my Muga Scan. It was an injection wait 20 minutes, then have another injection then i had to lay on a table for 8 minutes while the machine took pictures of my heart. It was a piece of cake. The oncologist should have the results in a couple of days. One more step closer to getting the Chemo started. I keep thinking the sooner I get it started the sooner it will be over.

    You are right, Nancy. Get it started and done with is my motto. Congrats on one more step toward finishing treatment. Just a few weeks ago it looked like such a long road for me -- now I am almost half-way through chemo. Can't believe how quickly it can go by. It will for you, too. Good luck!

    I never had this scan, as I mentioned. My oncologist was from the 'minimalist school of medicine'...sigh...she waited until I had trouble before doing anything. BUT I think my trouble was caused by the chemo from my first cancer (rectal...cisplatin, known for it's heart weakening) that I had less than a year earlier.

    I learned my lesson the second time, tho....water, water, water....I drank 4 quarts the day before, day of, and day after infusion. I ended up with NO lasting side effects...not even neuropathy...

    Congrats on them not finding anything in the nodes. I too had to have a MUGA scan that I couldn't find anyone that knew what it was at first, But it is ok. it doesn't hurt and they inject this nuclear stuff in you and wait for about 15 min for it to go all over you and then they take pictures of your heart and how it is pumping. The reason for this is {my radiologist told me all of this} to see how much it pumps out every beat because the certain types of chemo will harm your heart and most people pump 50-60 percent and this is very normal. mine pumps 51%. I wish you the best on your scans and you will survive.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I too had the MUGA 3x's due to the fact as it has been mentioned I was going to be infused with Adrimycin and Cytoxin... My onco tested before, during and after Chemo!!

    I had the choice of an echocardio or the MUGA... I did the MUGA... I do know that the gave me 2 injections(1, I was told was radioactive) each time... I had to wait like 15 - 20 minutes, then they began the scan which you do have to lay flat and still.

    Hope this helps and as everyone has said It is a shame you have the need for us, but, there is not a better place to have in your back pocket than this website and its Sincere and Genuine caring individuals who can help.
