Tuesday my husband and I drove to Vanderbilt for him to meet with a Liver surgeon. He was told he is a candidate for liver resection but since there was a spot in his lung that the lung had to be taken care of first. He ordered labs, CTscans of chest, abdomen, and pelvis, doppler of legs to see if blood clots are gone, and a pulmanary function test. He also got us an appt today with a Lung surgeon. He should us the CT scans and showed us the spot in my husband Frank's lung. He said is smooth and round like a marble and cancer is usually jagged
around the edges; he also the spot does not light up like cancer usually does on PET scans. He said the only way to be sure it is not cancer is to go in and remove it but Frank has to quit smoking and be completely smoke free 14 days before any surgery can be done. So we go back on the 23rd to have PET scan and then back again on the 28th for appt with Lung surgeon to get results of all tests and to see how long Frank has been smoke free. Also Frank is having his pre ops done then. They all said Frank has great chances but he first has to quit smoking. They will do lung surgery..heal for 4 to 6 weeks: go back to Vanderbilt and have some procedure to stop the blood supply to the right lobe of the liver to start it shrinking, and give that blood supply to the left lobe of the liver to help it start regenerating. After another 4 to 6 weeks, Frank will go back and have his liver resectioned. They said he will have a good prognosis. Frank says he is quitting smoking tonight. No more cigerettes starting in the morning...it is going to be hard after smoking for 45 years but he has to quit if he wants the surgeries. God keeps answering prayers and giving us hope. We have had two years of what they said was just palletive care with no hope. We thank God and everyone that is praying for us. Keep the prayers going up and we will for you.

    Fabulous!!
WOW!! That is fabulous news!! To be told you are just being given Palliative Care and here he now is getting surgeries that have a great prognosis! That is wonderful!!! The two of you should be dancing, dancing, dancing!! I love this!! Congratulations!! I think, with all the scares and terror that has been thrown his way, he may find quitting smoking, even after 45 years, is going to be easier than if he hadn't gone through the part of the journey he already has.

I'm so happy for both of you!!

    Great news!
That really is testimony for continuing care until more options arrive in the future! Palliative care for 2 years, now surgery! That's awesome! I pray that God will strengthen your husband in his battle not only against cancer, but his battle against tobacco addiction. Be strong!

    Cheryl,
Thank you for your comments. I cried in the lung doctors office just from joy and Frank did too. It is so great to have such positive comments from doctors and especially from you and others on this site. We are on cloud 9. Stop smoking has begun and so far so good. thanks again, God be with you.

Quitting is the hardest thing I have never accomplished. We never quit cause if we did we would never try and start back so we take it one day at a time and just choose not to smoke that day. Its a daily ritual that seems to be more in the "having nothing to do at the moment" that keeps you hooked, plus the fact that it releases endorphins that please us. It is a chemical addiction the same as meth or crack . It will kill you, it will make you stink, it will take you away from the ones you love way to early. It will keep you broke. I am making a car payment now on the money I save a month from not smoking $260 per month..Is that stupid or what !!! I had another friend that sang right next to me in the choir die this morning of lung cancer. She was 72 and had just finished her 12 treatment and was done with her chemo. She died of pneumonia. She to smoked, dammit, take the hint, if I can quit we all can. It takes way to many of us away from our loved ones. I quit being selfish 12/18/07. I will never ever let something control me the way they did again, including cancer. I have lost 2 close friends in the last 4 days and Im tired of the pain that it causes. Stand up and commit to not allow anything to control you or your life. Kick the cancer and the cigarettes and be done with them both, and lets continue this life here on earth for a while longer . We owe it to ourselves as well as the ones we love.......God Bless you all.......

You have had a rough week...losing friends, chemo, all of it. Yet you remain strong and so, so helpful and encouraging to all of us. Here's wishing God's hand on you and your journey...you are in my prayers daily.
