For those of you with interest:

My mom took the news of having thyroid cancer on top of colon cancer better than I thought. I think I planted enough seeds ahead of time to educated her about this new cancer to ward off any anxiety that may have consumed her. We were talking on the way to to doctor's office and she said bluntly, "You act like you already know. Do you?" I told her I did, told her what it was and how it would be treated...

We got to the doctor's office and her ENT was pretty matter of fact, said she needed her thyroid out and told her she didn't have the "bad type" of thyroid cancer. Hmmm is there a good type???

Anyway, mom's not thrilled about having more surgery, but who would be. She is however just rolling with the punches and surgery is scheduled for the 16th. She will stay in the hospital over night and they will monitor her calcium levels which are said to deplete after a thyroidectomy.

Thank you SO MUCH for all of your prayers. They were answered today and I am certain that the man upstairs heard all of your little voices rooting for my mom!

all my best to you!

Just as I figured....Mom is stronger than you might think!
One of the few 'perks' of cancer is that we become rather matter-of-fact about stuff. We ask 'how much do I do THIS time?', and pick up the sword afresh.

    Hugs to you both!

    Good News!
Yay! Glad to hear she's staying strong. She couldn't be luckier than to have a daughter like you on her side!

Your mother is a mighty warrior!
As are you! I am glad to see she is handling this newest bump so well and I know you are breathing easier. You can see that your mother isn't as fragile as you were afraid, and that has to help you in the darkest moments at night. Keep strong and tell your mother we are praying for her during her upcoming surgery.

    Awesome
You are so good to your Mom and she sounds like a heck of a strong woman. Be proud of you both...I am.

    Glad to hear your mom
Glad to hear your mom "rolled with the punches" about the thyroid news. I want to commend you for being such a supportive daughter! It really does amaze me the number of people who write on this board who aren't patients themselves, but caregivers. I suppose there are probably plenty of patients (especially older ones) who aren't computer savvy and would never end up on this kind of forum.
Well, you remember to take care of yourself as much as you take care of your mom!

    no avastin prior to surgery
I spoke with my mom's oncologist yesterday and she wants my mom to be off avastin this next treatment before she has surgery. We're trying to schedule the surgery the first week of February. My mom actually has a sense of humor about the surgery. She told the surgeon that (preface: she has lost a lot of weight) if he wouldn't mind, she has a lot of extra skin on her neck and he could take as much of it off as he wants when he does the surgery. He just laughed.

So we wait. My mom asked & answered outloud the other day, "What am i supposed to be learning from this, it must be patience."

    Tummy tuck!
I tried to wrangle a tummy tuck the last time they went in and it was a no go as well! When Sarantou went in to put the port in again I tried for a breast lift and he just laughed as well!

    I'm laughing so hard...
I told my surgeon to think like he is in Wal-Mart...put any and everything in his 'cart' that he thinks I don't need!!!

I LOVE your mom's attitude...yes, patience is at the top of the learning list!
