Any survivors out there that tested positive for lymph nodes? I had 4 yet was told to be optimistic. I am optimistic yet very concerned about the nodes.

I had 4 cycles of chemo
I had 4 cycles of chemo before surgery so the surgeon said he couldn't tell how many I had before but after surgery he removed 15 lymph nodes and 2 still had cancer in them. I had to have 4 more cycles of chemo after the surgery and then radiation. I was diagnosed Aug. 2003.

    Sentinel nodes....
Yup. Won me the 'big' prize....chemotherapy. 6 months after finishing treatment for stage III rectal cancer.

    Next 5 nodes were clear.

Cancer free now....my oncologist is kicking me back to my 'regular' doctor...

    Hang in there!!!

    Tamoxifen
Kathi, I read your post from another thread, and you said you had taken Tamoxifen, and had no side effects. Please elaborate, as I am interested in hearing this before my visit to my oncologist on the 9th of December. Femara is really doing a number on me, and especially with depression. Also have major hip problems, and can't walk immediately upon standing...have to wait a few seconds to get my balance. I had never had these kind of problems before starting Femara, and am not on anything else, so must be this drug. Tamoxifen works differently than an AI, and I am hoping I can talk with the onc and get him to try a different drug category. Thank you for your informative posts, by the way....always interesting. Hugs

I had two nodes pos. When I
I had two nodes pos. When I found out about the nodes (a year ago) I started paying close attention to that characteristic. I found lots of women who were long time away from treatment who had lots more nodes pos. than me. So I stopped worrying (so much). I hope you can too. In some ways, the nodes may be telling us that our bodies are so good at filtering that the cancer cells that strayed from the tumor were unable to get past the nodes. In other words, they were caught at the lint trap! One year through treatment now and I feel pretty good and don't look too bad either! love and best wishes, Joyce

    sorry, I'm in San Diego...
Just got your post (the little inn I'm at has spotty Internet....)

I am into year 3 on Tamoxifen. At first, I had 3-4 hot flashes a day. After about a month, it dwindled to 1 or 2 per week. I still have them occasionally, but not so that they get in the way...

My bones never ached, my joints weren't tender. No side effects at all, except for a positive one...my bone density has improved!!! Now, I don't have my uterus or ovaries. So, I don't need worry about cancer going there...if you do, and you are on Tamoxifen, you just need to have your 'normal' yearly done...

Kathi, Thanks for your response. I did see the oncologist today, and we have switched me to Tamoxifen for at least two years. AT that point he may put me back on an AI, and hopefully I will not have the side effects I have been experiencing with Femara. As far as the depression is concerned, he feels that I have pushed myself to be "well" quicker than should be expected, as well as the side effect of Femara. Guess I thought I would come out of my last radiation treatment, and the next day get on with my life. His response was that with chemo (TAC) and six weeks of radiation, it takes a body one year to recover physically. I had never heard this, and feel somewhat better that I am still at the beginning stage of my recovery. Also, he verified my cancer as Stage T II, ER+, PR-, HER2-. Looks like I will be on some kind of hormonal treatment for the five years. Again, thanks for your response.
