Take the Pain Pills!
When i had my port put in on 9/17/08 it felt like I got kicked by a horse. Vicodin was wonderfull! I also had what I describe as "chest Pain" but it was up near the top of my breast bone. A lot of things were moved and tugged on to get the tube from the port over to the heart. Good news is my pain only lasted about a week, with the help of Vicodin. It didn't make me sick or anythng.0 -
I would call the doctor
I remember the pain from having the port put in feeling much like it did when I dislocated my shoulder years before. It wasn't unbearable, but the pain meds definitely made the discomfort better. Honestly, I think I could have even managed without the pain meds, but after all I had been through at that point, I wasn't going to play the hero. If it is bothering him to that extent, he may need to have them look at it... I would at least call the doctor and ask about it.
Why is he afraid the pain meds will make him sick? As long as I remembered to eat a little something with them when I took them, I didn't usually get sick... If he's in pain, it will slow his healing progress and make himself and everyone else around him uncomfortable. He needs to find some relief.
Hope it feels better soon!

Update on the Port
So my husband went to see the surgeon today. The surgeon checked him over and told him that the pain he is experiencing is normal. After he explained to my husband what he had to do during the surgery, my husband was able to relax and accept the pain. The surgeon also said, don't be a hero, take the pain meds. So, after a long sleepless night and me telling him for the last day and half to take the pain meds, he is going to go home and take the pain meds and take a nap. Hopefully, he will be out of pain and alot happier by the time I get home from work.
Thank you again for your input.

I was in constant pain from my 2" tumor that had settled against my tailbone. But I refused to take anything stronger than Tylenol, for fear of becoming addicted. HOGWASH!!! I lost all sorts of weight, because I didn't want to eat from the pain.
Finally, I started taking the Vicodin that had been perscribed...I started eating again, was up and around...
I hope he gets better FAST!

Something we should all make a mental note of, and caregivers should as well, so they can remind their loved ones that they are caring for.
Pharmaceutical pain killers that are prescribed by a doctor, are exactly that... PAIN - KILLERS. They are there to kill the pain. That is their purpose... if you have pain, depending on the kind of pain it is, the doctor will prescribe an appropriate pain killer for that pain... and will monitor it so that if the pain continues and the med isn't working, then they will change the med. There are so many medications out there and, just like we are unique individuals with unique reactions to the same treatments... we all react differently to pain meds, hence why doctors have to experiment somewhat until they find what works for you. Being a martyr and saying, "It doesn't hurt that bad", or "I'll save that pain med until I really need it" defeats the purpose... and totally throws the plan off kilter. The plan is to stop the pain before it gets out of hand... it's a lot easier to control pain if you can catch it at the beginning and not wait until it's out of control. Once it's out of control, it's a lot harder to manage.
So when we are talking a temporary kind of pain, such as a port installation... it really doesn't matter if your doctor prescribes you incredibly strong pain meds. If that is what it takes to make you comfortable, then that is what you take... knowing full well it's going to be for a temporary time period. If the kind of pain you are having is something that is long term, then they will prescribe a long term pain med. I don't think ANYONE with cancer or any serious illness should worry about getting addicted. As long as there is pain there, the meds will go to work on the pain and there is no left over meds to then act as a recreational high.
Pain will prevent healing, so if you are in pain, the #1 goal should be to work with your doctor to get out of pain.
My oncologist said something to me at the beginning of this journey that has stuck with me all along. She said this will be a long journey ahead and I will more than likely have good days with treatments and not so good days. If part of the treatment plan will be future surgeries, then we can pretty much figure there will be pain involved. But in this day and age, there is no reason for pain, no matter what the cause of it during your cancer treatment... because for every type of pain out there, there are medications to relieve it so you are never physically in pain. The trick will be finding the correct pain med for my pain... but we will find it, not to worry. And so far... almost 2 years later, she has been right.
As for the shoulder pain because of the port installation. I, too, was wide awake for the surgery. I think it was more because I just wasn't affected by the med through the IV that was suppose to knock me out. Apparently, that is not uncommon. I definitely had a sore arm for the week after the surgery... and it was difficult to raise it, but I just figured, "Hey, if they cut into you, place a foreign object, sew it to a muscle so it doesn't go floating around, then it's bound to be uncomfortable". I told my onc this and she upped my pain med. Did that stop the pain or was it because the week was almost up? I have no idea.
I had the port in for almost a year (8 months of it was for chemo). But then my shoulder and upper arm really started hurting. Again, I was put on pain meds, but for whatever reason, they didn't help. Since we were stopped the chemo treatments, she ordered that the port come out. Well, sheesh... that arm hurt for months after the port came out and it seemed nothing would touch the pain. We FINALLY found a med which my GP actually prescribed to me for my arthritis... and that stopped the pain in the shoulder... go figure, eh??

Pain and Fear
It sounds like your husband is afraid. Afraid of the unknown, afraid of the known. I was very grumpy after seeing the infusion room the first time. When they inserted my port I also go a tour of the cancer clinic and that infusion room made me nauseous! I remember when a friend was sick with chemo and wanted cheesecake. She was afraid to eat it because she had been battling nausea. "What if it makes me sick?" she said. "What if it does? What then? What if it doesn't? Are you going to never eat again in case you get sick?" The pain meds may make him sick, but the pain already has. Choices are more difficult when you're scared.

Day 5 since the port went in
Ok, so it's been 5 days since the port went in, and he is still in an extreme amount of pain. He did start taking the painkillers that the doctor gave him (oxycodiene, I think)and the first pill helped a bit, but now he says they are not working at all. I just don't know what to do for him. He said, it's ok, I'm just going to have to ride it out - I hate seeing him in pain. I work full time and it is so difficult for me to leave in the morning, knowing that he is in pain. I wish I could just take all the pain away from him. I wish I was the one with Cancer and all the pain - just so I wouldn't have to see him suffer like this.
Again, thanks for listening

The last time, did you mention that when hubby pushes on the top of the port, the pain leaves? Maybe the surgery snagged a nerve. I didn't have much pain with my port, unless I bumped it against something hard...then YOUCH!
Doesn't hurt to call...ask him to rate his pain, 1 to 10. Have him REALLY think about it before replying....that will be good info when you (or he) makes the call.
Hang in there, dear sweet soul! I've got my arms around you....

I had mine put in and never had 1 iota of pain. My does float around a bit though so im pretty sure it was not attached to the muscle tissue. There has to be something else involved there like a nerve or something. I would not ask the Dr. now with a week of pain. I would tell him that something is definitely wrong and that you want something done with it......0 -
mediport pain
Hey Sandi, sorry to hear about the pain your husband is having. I've had 2 ports put in, one on the left side, which was removed after 14 months because it was plugged,(cheap plastic one). Cancer came back so I had another one put on the right side.(titanium) Anyway, there was obvious pain both times but after 7-10 days it subsided. I took Lortabs for pain till it left. I don't think it should be sore for more than 10 days but everyone is different. I'm curious if he started chemo yet to see if it works properly. My prayers are with both of you and Bichon too! Hope things work out, later, Randy PS. the port on the right side is much better for me than the one on the left side was.0 -
Today is better
Ok, so here it is Thursday and finally my husband is feeling a bit better. He now has more movement in his arm, he says it still hurts but not like it was before. Last night I told him maybe you should just bear the pain and move your arm around instead of sitting there cradling it on your chest, maybe that part of the problem - your not moving it and then when you do it hurts like hell. So he started moving it around, this morning he reports that it feels much better. Now we can relax a little bit. He will be starting chemo #2 on Wednesday, so I suspect there will be some pain again, but hopefully it won't be for very long.

glad to hear he is finally getting some relief from the pain. Good luck with his 2nd treatment on Wednesday. At least he can enjoy his weekend!

I also had my first one on my left, it was a dual access port. Had to have it removed when the 6 inches of catheter broke loose and languished about in my heart. Then, when I had my recurrence they put the new port in on my right and it's a single access titanium job. I haven't had ANY problems with it and it's been over 2 years now. The first one was very positional and i used to have to hold my arm just so to keep the chemo flowing. I don't have any issues with the new one, thank GOD! I also didn't have a lot of pain with either of mine, thankfully! After all we go through, little blessings go a long way!

He is so lucky to have you!!!!! What a great idea!!!
I know my port (I think I mentioned I had it for over 2 years, no problem), well, actually the line to the vena cava, was attached to different places going up my chest...maybe one of his is on an active muscle!
I'm sending vibes that #2 will not be painful AT ALL!!
