My husband's surgery

Thank youMadre said:Hang in there
Sandi,
When I had my surgery I was in the hospital for 10 days. I too ran a fever, I got a UTI from the cathiter and it caused me to get a blood infection. Antibiotics and I was fine. I had surgery on Thursday, walking on Friday, Jello on Sunday. They actually gave me food too soon and my intenstines hadn't woken up yet so my body didn't process well, so as much as you would love to see your husband get out of there and eat food, don't rush it. They told me that intestines go into a "paralized" state when you mess with them, such as surgery, and they have to wake up before they can process as before. At least in the hospital they can monitor him. Being home would be scary not knowing what is normal. I think my first bathroom trip was Tuesday after surgery. Just remember, nothing in, nothing out. I will continue to pray.

My husband is doing much better today. He got a good nights sleep last night and they have started him back on his own BP meds (they had him on a nitroglycerin patch to regulate his BP)I think that is why is was up. As for the fever, we still haven't figured that one out yet, they just took his catheter out today, so we will see if that helps. I know he's feeling better because he's asking for me to bring him his Nestea Cool Ice Tea and some shorts, I guess he's tired of feeling naked. They also took the dressing off of his incision - he says it looks good, not red or anything - but tender. He is able to get in and out the bed himself and takes himself on walks around the hallways. I'm so proud of him, he's trying really hard to get better so he can come home. He says he hates it there, they keep waking him up all the time. It will be nice to have him home (when he's ready).
Thanks for all the kind thoughts, prayers and encouragement.

Hi Sandi,
Glad your hubby feels better today. I can't remember but I think I had a low grade fever off and on when in hospital. He is in the right place to make sure he gets better. Now that he can move around even more, you will see more of an improvement. Getting the catheter out is wonderful. I hated that the most. YUCK. Now hoping he gets liquid soon and he will feel even more human. HUGS and hoping he goes home this weekend!

Thank you, I don't think he is on Morphine - she gave him something that started with a "D" Dilotin i think - but i'm not sure. But he has to ask for the pain meds they don't have him hooked up to a pump, which i guess is good because my husband is not one for whining and doesn't want to bother the nurses asking for pain meds all the time. I just talked to him and he said he's been out of bed all morning and walked some more, but now he is back in bed and in some pain, he is waiting for them to bring him some pain meds. He sounds so much better today, I can't wait to get up to the hospital this afternoon to see him, his mother is with him right now. But you know when my husband isn't home something breaks at home. This morning I got up to the ceiling in my downstairs family room being all wet and my son saying, Mom something is leaking. Of course it is, dad's not home why wouldn't it. Thank god I work for a construction company and I am friends with most of the subcontractors, so I won't get ripped off, if I do, the plumber won't be getting paid from my company and I won't be taking any of his calls...LOL
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers
Hi. I'm not sure about the spelling either. But a lot of nurses call it "Hospital Heroin"; it is stronger than morphine and is usually not hooked into a pump. It is really good stuff, but I don't think it lasts as long as morphine. I took it orally, but felt like it was killing me when they tried an IV infusion--thought the top of my head was going to blow right off; it's kind of scary.
It's really great that he's been out of bed all that time. The more you move, the sooner you go home and the quicker you heal. Of course, he shouldn't overdo things, either. Also, he really needs to get the pain meds before his pain gets strong. It is easier to maintain a low pain level than to bring down a high pain level.
Of course things will break down when dad's not home. It's a law. I'm sorry. Dealing with stuff like that is the LAST thing you need. Just know that everyone is thinking of and praying for you and your family.
Hugs,

Wonderful. I'm so glad he is better. I know that I improved by leaps and bounds once that @#$$%@^$% NG tube was out. Toward the end I was pleading with the cleaning lady, other patients' visitors and random people to take it out. Six days of NG tube is NO FUN! So I know your husband will get a lot better very soon. Keep heart. We're all still praying for improvement and healing.

Sandi, I was so glad to read that your husband is doing better today! He HAS to be doing better if he's tired of that naked feeling and wants his own clothing! And the fact that he's getting himself up and into the halls to roam is a REALLY good sign! He will be eating soon, and before you know it back home! Ask a neighbor to do the repairs while your husband is incapacitated, i am sure there are LOTS just waiting to have the opportunity to DO something for you guys!

I had my colon resected on July 28 and went through similar circumstances as your husband. I was in the hospital for 7 days. My colon did not "wake up" and I was stuck eating ice chips with a NEG tube up my nose. When the tube came out, I walked until the physical therapists urged me to stop. The walking seems to get my colon working. I was determined to get the hell out of there. I was so very tired of the ice chip diet, sponge baths, heparin shots in my belly and those 5 am visits by the junior docs. Best to you and your husband. You are both stronger than you know. David0 -
Pooping contest!
Hi Sandi,
Just a little humor. After I had my resection, I was in the hospital for 5 days. Yes, they do listen for bowl noises.
And like a lot of the people said, walk, walk, walk (like he has been doing). Or at least I got much better after walking. It hurt like you know what at first but was better in the long run.
Anyway, I had a room mate that also was waiting to get out of the hosptial but they wouldn't let either of go until we pooped! So... like about day 4 we'd be looking at each other to see if the other was going to go. We'd wish each other good luck! hehehehehe.
I have to say, when I finally did, I came out and almost yelled it to my room mate! Actually I was grinning and saying "yes" in the bathroom after it happened. I let the nurse know RIGHT AWAY. hehehehe. Hope this makes you both smile.
Wishing your hubby the best.
Remember..use your energy for moving forward!

On the road to Recovery
My prayers are with you both for a smooth recovery. Each day will get a little better. Stay positive and have faith!0 -
Minor set back
Ok, so the doctor put my husband back on ice chips. He was on a liquid diet and it was not working - he was getting bloated because it had no where to go. He only has sounds on his ascending colon NOT the decending colon, so the doc put him back on ice chips. He has a pain on his right side that the doctor said is gas - so we just need to move it along. And he has not had any pain meds since Wednesday evening. Other than that he's good, gets himself up in the morning, washes up, shaves, brushes his teeth (except this morning - he dropped it on the floor, so He's waiting for a new one) LOL.
So, now we just play the waiting game.

Well Wishes
I hope that your husband can get things moving soon. It took me about 6 days before things would get moving. I too had issues with the pain meds so I told them only Tylenol no narcotics. I think it was about the same time frame in on Monday off pain meds by Wednesday and out of the hospital by Saturday. It takes time but he will get there. It sounds like he has a great supporter in you! I wish your family well.
