Neuropathy

Hello all. Haven't posted in a while, but have been reading up on progress and challenges with you all. My wife Linda ended treatment in February and is struggling with pretty profound neuropathy in her feet, especially. At the end of our walks she says it feels like beach gravel. We know we should be hopeful and grateful (focused first...) on keeping cancer down and away, but does anyone have any experience or resources on how to deal with this?

Chris

When I was having neuropathy it was in my hands - I took the B6 that others suggested and that worked for a long time. After going back to work the neuropathy was worse and so I went on Neurontin and Amitryptline. The Neurontin helps repair the nerve damage and the Amitriptyline, although a anti-depression med, helps with pain when paired with the Neurontin. I took this for almost 4.5 months and then slowly weaned myself off. I haven't had problems since then.

I hope you find something that works - and thanks for keeping us posted on Linda. My best to you both.

Thanks for the update, Chris. I have taken Vit. B-6 and L-glutamine daily since I started chemo March, 2007. I only have slight neuropathy on my left side hand and foot. Both of my feet are frequently hot when I go to bed so I keep a large sac of rice in the freezer to put at my feet when I go to bed and they are bothering me. I also have the "beach gravel" feel after walking but I just ignore it. The rice ice bag might help soothe this but I haven't tried it. I think my neuropathy is getting better although I am still on Taxol. My oncologist thinks that the carbo platin was the cause of most of mine and I have been off it for six months so that may be right. (((HUGS))) Saundra

So good to hear from you again, Chris. But sorry to hear Linda has that awful neuropathy. Boy, do I remember it well - burning, pain, on and on, in my hands, arms, feet. My regimine was B-6 and L-Glutamine. It actually subdued the pain quite a bit. It will go away after chemo, but does take time. I had no success with Neurontin or Elavil. But everyone is different. Tell Linda to hang in there. It takes time, but it WILL get better.
    Prayers & Hugs,
    Monika
