External Beam Treatment

For those considering beam treatment for the pelvic cavity and then the prostate; I wish I had taken care of some plumbing problems before the treatment started. After the 3rd week of pelvic cavity, I wanted to quit. Going to the toilet (both 1 & 2) were killing me. I spent more time on the toilet than anything else. If you have hemorrhoids, get them taken care of 2 to 3 months prior to pelvic cavity rad treatment. If you have urinary track problems, like strictures (not associated with the prostate), try to get it corrected. All 12 biopsy samples had 5 to 70% cancer, G scores 8-9, no medical indictaion of cancer outside prostate. Oncologist just wanted to make sure that if cancer was outside, it would be killed. The choice was surgery & external beam or just external beam. With plenty of pain & mental meds, I made it!

    Thank you. Before treatment, there was no pain. Surviving with pain is very difficult and can not be done without friends.
    Searches for "Radiation beam treatment" and other word combinations did not turn up any results for this web site. My other issue searches were also nil.

    I am newly diagnosed. IMRT external beam rec'd. Am age 77. Have you had related tx? Would appreciate your comments. JoeS.

    I'm sorry to be so dense, but explain IMRT and what do you mean? Have I had related tx?

    Please give yourself time to ask many questions about your treatment choice. I found myself in some very painful conditions, because no one had discussed with me what to expect. If you have any plumbing problems #1 or #2, try to get them fixed prior to rad treatment. In many cases problems with #1 are taken care of with the cancer treatment. But if you have strictures outside the prostate, it just adds to the pain. If you have hemrrohides(?), get them taken care of several months prior to rad tx. Depending on your Gleson score, 8-9, there will be a pelvic cavity dose to kill potential lymph node cancer cells. This is what gave me fitts with hemrrohides, because your rectum & lower gut will get dosed.
