Survivors Day

Hi Everyone. Today was my first survivor's day event. Our local cancer center put this event on at a local environmental center here...lots of information, a free lunch and gift, and live music. It was very nicely done, but a bit overwhelming. I looked around and you know, there are so many families and different types of people who have been touched by the beast that it is amazing. I don't think there is one family left anywhere that has not been touched by cancer in some way. So to all of my friends here, and to some I have lost , I say thank you for sharing part of your lives with me. This day is in honor of all of you who have battled and continue to battle. I am in awe of all of you. May God bless all of you. Cindy

    Yes, it IS striking how many people are affected by cancer these days....

    I remember my first survivor's day...I wasn't feeling very special that day, having lost my hair recently...but MAN! did I feel good as soon as I got there...everyone was so kind!

    Relay For Life is another awe-inspiring experience...I was fortunate enough, by being a Legislative Ambassador, to attend one in Washington D.C., on the mall in front of the capital....there were 10,000 in attendance!!!

    I'm glad you were able to attend.
    I am in the commitee for Relay for Life and we do this to honor survivors, to remember the one we have lost and to fight back the beast. Those of us in the commintte have been touch by cancer in different ways, some have lost family members and some are survivors themselves. This year, for the first time, I will be attending as a survivor. I was diagneosed with BC in March and I just had my second round of chemo.
    I thank you for sharing your first survivor's day event with us and hope it was a pleasant experience.

    Survivor's Day?? 5 years into my survivorship, I didn't know there was such an event! I must really be out of the loop!! Survivors and their supporters are certainly an amazing group, aren't they? Or should I say, aren't WE???

    I had the honor of meeting KathiM at the DC Relay For Life~ the luminarias were 7 deep surrounding the Reflecting Pool. When the sun went down, purple spotlights illuminated the sky, and a bagpipe procession marked the opening of the luminaria ceremony...dare I say there wasn't a dry eye in the house? And, as Kathi said, there were 10,000 of us!

    We are in awe of you as well.

    I have not heard of survivor's day either. I attended Relay for Life this year. I am ashamed to say it was my first time. I wish I had attended when it wasn't about me. Now I have to attend every year to make up for it! Thanks for your beautiful story about your experience and for sharing your life with me. And hey, luminarias, Washington DC jet setting....I just KNEW there had to be a glamorous side to cancer...Count me in! love, Joyce

    Hello Ladies. Every year for the past 6-7, the Regional Cancer Center in this area has hosted a survivors day in conjunction with National Survivors Day. It is a big thing here with coverage on the local news. It basically is a big picnic given by all the employees at the center. They have live music, a nice lunch, refreshments, exhibits with info and you sign up for a suvivor certificate. All of this is free for the patients there or elsewhere. I think this is wonderful. And I am not sure when the national day is. I had planned on doing the relay for life also this year. I guess I just live in a very good town. hugs, Cindy
