briwn spots on face

Hi I am on 5fu on my 4th round, has anyone had brown spots on their face, it looks like after the summer when you've been in the sun. My hands also seem discolored on the knuckle area, I will ask my dr. I don't see him for 2 weeks, so I thought I'd ask my friends here!!!

    I didn't have problems with my face but hands turned brownish. My onc told me it is normal It went away right after. It looked like I was in the sun but only my hands. It will go away so don't worry. Take care and take one treatment at a time and it will be over soon. Take care

    Hi there, Butterfly! I don't know if your spots are the same as mine. I'm fair skinned and freckly to begin with, but i've noticed many more new freckles particularly on my face. They are darker than they used to be too. My skin has always been sensitive to the 5FU. During my preadjuvant, i got 2nd degree burns on my hands that i thought would be permanent scars, but eventually healed pretty well. Also my skin gets blotchy sometimes, and discolored. I'm on Folfox, but this happened the last time when i was just on the 5FU with radiation, so i KNOW it's the 5FU. One of the first things i was warned about when i started the 5FU was that it makes you very photosensitive, and prone to 3rd degree sunburns, so just make sure you stay out of the sun, or use 2,000 spf! LOL! I use 55, and it works pretty well.

    Hi Butterfly,

    I can't say I had the brown spots on my face but I did get sun spots on my arms. Last year, while on Chemo in the summer time, I would get out in the yard as much as possible.
    Wore sunscreen on face and a big hat, long sleeve shirt (I rolled the sleeves up maybe 3 inches) and long pants.

    Well...wouldn't you know, I would forget to put sunscreen on that 3 inches of arm (that the sleeves were rolled up). Both arms have the sun spots. I was told those spots would never go away.

    So..as the others have said. Watch out for the sun and always wear protection (even driving/riding in the car with the sun comming in the window)

    I am now nearly 4 yrs out of chemo with 5FU and leuco, and I developed very brown sun spots on my hands, and somewhat on my face. Over time, the face larger areas have faded, but I do have more large freckly type spots (sounds worse than it looks, I hope. My skin has always been sun sensitive, but on chemo, it was much more so. I wore light nylon long pants with built in sun screen protection (outdoor stores have plenty) as well as a long sleeved shirt out of UV protecting material and a large brimmed hat AND high SPF sunscreen. The areas on my hands still get darker in the summer, but it seems like a small price to pay!

    I had brown spots on my hands and feet, I find that three months after my last chemo they are fading away. So hang in there.
