diagnostic surgery question

My mom is 68 and is scheduled for a hysterectomy on Thursday. She has had irregular bleeding for 1.5 years without telling anyone and assuming it was in her urine only went to a uroligist who gave her antibiotics for 16 mos. She changed doctors with the New Year (thank God) and just informed me that she has had multiple inconclusive biposies so her doctor is performing surgery. When I pressed her for the reasons she said to determine what is wrong. I am 3000 miles away and frustrated. Do doctors perform a hysterectomy w/o significant concern for cancer?

    Hello, I am the same age as your mom, and had a total hysterectomy after noticing bleeding, and having a suspicious ultrasound and then a biopsy which was positive for adenocarcinoma. Surgery was july 23,'07. Don't have the answer to your question about circumstances under which doctors perform a hysterectomy, but I can say that my surgery resulted in all cancer being removed. After 3 sessions of radiation,I was cancer free. My followup will be every 3 months for five years. So, keep in mind your Mom's hysterectomy will answer the questions that the biopsys didn't. I will keep you and your Mom in my prayers. Take care and let me know what happens if you can.

    My mom's surgery went well. I just spoke to my mom's doctor and they chose to perform the hysterectomy vaginally in order to get a firm diagnosis in the quickest possible way. She had a 4cm tumor and some endometrial wall involvement but not all the way through the muscle wall which is good. We will have a pathology report tomorrow and then know next steps. Thank you for your response the other day.

    Thanks for letting me know about your Mom. You both will be in my prayers. As a Mom, I know how hard it is to deal with this. We want to protect our kids as much as possible -it's part of our nature. I have watched my daughters deal with my surgeries and that was not easy.
