Dead Jaw

I have Osteoradionecrosis of the Jaw. I have a section of my left mandible that is dead bone from radiation. The Drs have pulled most of my teeth & want to remove that section of bone & replace with the small leg-bone in the calf. Has anyone had this post-radiation side effect and gone through this operation? Am told it is an eight hour Op room ordeal. Pretty scary stuff!

Hi Catfish,
I've had radiation in the head/neck area more than once and I know it affects your teeth and your bones. I have not been diagnosed with osteoradionecrosis but I know my mastoid is not what it used to be. I lost some of my teeth but before they were taken out, my dentist talked to the radiologist because they were afraid my bone might crumble and I was sent to the Oxigen Chamber for about 30 sessions, then oral surgery followed by ten more sessions in the oxigen chamber. The oral surgeon told me that when he started pulling teeth, they would fall apart. I had to wait months before getting my permanent denture because we were waiting to see if the bone on my jaw was going to crumble or if it would take the metal implants.
Well, the oxigen chamber worked very well for me. Not only did it strengthen the bone but helped make more "blood" conections. The implants are still there, firmly attached.
I didn't go through an operation like you are going to have. I hope all goes well for you and I will keep you in my prayers.0
