Not good news on ct

Went to oncologist today. CT results supposedly show that since my husbands liver resection 7 weeks ago , the mets have returned and doubled in size?? However, the oncologist and surgeon say this is very unusual and there is a possibility that the radiologist is not interpreting the scan correctly. The lesions are in same spot and double that were removed with clear margins 7 weeks ago just doesn't seem possible to me. We are questioning whether its the "surgery" they are seeing, but radiologist says no. He is scheduled to have an MRI done on tues at a different hospital now as oncologist says she's had problems with this radiology dept in the past. Guys.. Really need your prayers that this is all a huge mistake . We wont have results til the 18th, which is ironic since it was a year ago that hubby was dx upon colonscopy. Has anyone had scar tissue or false readings on ct's before? thanks and God Bless

    Diane,

    I'll be praying that all goes well. It doesn't seem possible to have mets returned so quickly after a liver resection. If it is a false reading, not great news that you have a radiologist that doesn't know what he is doing. We all depend heavily on CT/PET scans to tell us how we are doing. Keep us posted and best of luck.

    wow Diane that does sound quite fast for mets to return and double in size. I would wait for the mri before getting worried. so easy to say i know. praying all goes well

    Hi Diane,
    This sounds next to impossible to me as well. I would not even think your husbands liver has had time to completely regenerate yet. How could there be mets when that entire chunk was removed. Sure, they can see the surgical margins on the scans. If I were you I would try to feel confident that the MRI will turn out OK. I am so sorry you have to be put through all of this during the holidays, but hopefully it will be all over soon enough!

    I too think that this could be impossible so soon after a resection, especially if they are in the same spot. I would think what they are seeing is some type of scar tissue. Radiologists and doctors have been known to be wrong before. It has happened many times before and they are human. I would also take comfort in the fact that the onc and surgeon both find this unusual. I will pray that this is all just one huge mistake.

    What a shock to hear!!! I'm with everyone else, and am praying like you that this is all a very huge mistake!!!!It does not seem possible. I am so sorry that you have to be put through this. The waiting is so hard. I will be anxiously waiting and praying for your new test results. God Bless you both.

    They are right this does seem unlikely. Colon cells are by the nature slow growing although some are more aggressive than others. The liver is a blood vessel rich envrioment and liver cells develop rapidly. Still for cancer cells to be in the same locations and double the size? Key word with radiologists is "interpreting" what they see. Hopefully, its time for a new pair of glasses.

    Diane: I'm with everyone else, it just doesn't seem right, and for the doctor to send you elsewhere for the MRI is extremely telling, methinks. Has you husband had a recent CEA test done? What were the results? How does he feel? I know that after my resection I noticed a big difference in how I felt (aside from the normal recuperation that takes place after such a big surgery).     Hi Monica, they took cea yesterday when we were there. Don't have results yet. He feels fine , went back to work a week ago , gained 2 lbs, etc.

    Thanks everyone. I called the surgeon, he says he has seen a lot of different things happen but can't really rule anything out til he has the mri and sees it for himself. This didn't reassure me much either way. God Bless.
