surgical side effects

I was diagnosed with Stage II rectal cancer in May. The lower pelvic anastomosis was done in early August. I am six weeks past my temporary ileostomy reversal and currently doing the adjuvent therapy. My anastomosis is really low (tumor was 6cm from sphincter) and curious if there are any other men out there who started with retrograde ejaculation and had it correct over time. It has been very difficult finding feedback on this issue either in print or through support groups, many of which consist mostly of women.

    I have one of my patient partners who mentioned perfomance issues. He is a young (30's) man, and said over time it has improved....but still he occasionally needs a bit of 'help' from Viagra. I don't know if he had the retrograde ejaculation...but I will ask him tomorrow...

    Did you have radiation too? I haven't had the problem with retrograde ejaculation but I think the radiation cut down the prostate production so there is less material to carry the swimmers.

    Almost 8 years post diagnosis for stage 3 rectal cancer. Had preoperative chemoradiation, surgery and chemotherapy afterwards. NED and considered cured. However, I share the problem that you describe. Kind of a bummer, but it has gotten somewhat better. However, given that the surgeon warned me after surgery that I would likely experience retrograde ejaculation, i was not too surprised. He also told me I might be impotent after the extensive surgery...I was not. I have always considered my..... glass half-full after that. Anyway...45 and things still work, just a little differently. Time and health will help you through this issue. God Speed!

    Thank you for the input. I have had the chemoreadiation neoadjuvant therapy. So it is possible the radiation is the source of the problem according to the urologist. Time will tell.

    Thank you RunnerZ for sharing your experience. The cure is the end objective and I too was warned this may be the case post surgery or worse. I am giving it the time required and glad to know things do get better. This is all coming about at 44 so my hind sight for this is pretty short. Let alone all the other adjustment and changes which seem to make no two days the same.

    I've been told that in my case a raTME and very low anastomosis is technically possible, but I'm being steered toward an APR with permanent colostomy. There is no talk from doctors of recovery of function after a very low anastomosis, only bad or worse fecal incontinence and other LARS including sex problems. Thanks
