ulcerated colitis

My husband was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer Jan. 06. He started with chemo and radiation then resection and because of lymph node involement 4 more months of chemo. He has a pet scan every 3 months. So far everything looks good no sign of any spread but the scan shows activity in the rectal area. He has had 4 biopies all are negative. They are keeping a close watch on this area but seemed to think its ulcerated colitis, imflammation from radiation. Has anyone experienced this?

    Good morning, Valley -

    I didn't have radiation so I am certainly not speaking from personal experience, but I would saythat it is possible that there is colitis as a result of radiation and even from chemo.

    When was your husbands last colonoscopy or in this case a sygmoidoscopy? Visualization can tell a lot.

    My pet scans have not shown activity at the resection site, but they have shown activity that has been attributed to inflammation from an infection in my lungs. A follow-up PET scan showed that the area had resolved and that inflammation was the cause of the activity. Try not to worry since the biopies have not shown anything.

    I had an area in the rectal area light up on pet scan. It was from inflammation, I have been diagnosed with radiation colitis.

    I am now 4 years out from surgery and remain cancer free from my stage 3 rectal cancer

    So yes I have experienced what your husband is going through.

    Hang in there, it gets better.

    Thanks so much everyone its great hearing from you. My husband had his colonoscopy Oct. 16th. No sign of cancer. 2 very small polyps removed for biopsy. His Doctor seems confident they are benign
